Joe Rose reporting our O line looks better now then at any point last year

Are you implying that the QB position should be easier to learn than blocking assignments? That we should have patience for an o-line who were horrible last year, yet the QB playing behind them gets no such benefit?

Not at all, I'm implying that its funny some fans see the need for patience with a 28 year old quarterback that was mediocre last year and didn't offer the same patience to Lamar Gordon as they argued that runningback was our biggest need in round one(regardless of who Saban actually chose and why), despite the fact that we had invested under Spielman valuable draft picks in both players.

I believe McDougal is an upgrade to the O-line, along with Damien Cook and Anthony Alabi and hopefully the maturation into a starter of Vernon Carey, so I hardly see this as a status quo line from last year, especially considering the addition of a true upgrade in coaching in Hudson Houck.

I think the funniest part about this BS post is that you think these offensive lineman aren't agressive by nature.

nobody has to be taught anything except maybe how not to read too much into someone's posts. he didn't say anybody wasn't aggressive by nature. he said "IF" they're not aggressive by nature, they can't be taught. he hasn't commented on the players on the phins' line at all. don't get yourself all worked up, i don't think losman7 was trying to start anything.

i don't think much can be determined about the nature of this line from last year, because they seemed to be confused about where to go and whom to block. if houck can clear away the confusion, the players will show their true natures, and THEN we can start arguing about who can be taught and who can't be taught. sometimes aggressive natures are stymied by too much thinking on the field. and that can be changed.

Well I look at it this way. Last season our offensive line had the same ability of stopping the defense as mini-blinds have with stopping smell. Not much. But if Houck can get them working together as a cohesive unit, and to learn from their mistakes and move forward then i can see their morale boosting. That in itself would be an increase in comparison to last year.

I agree. I'm glad I wasn't one of those people. I argued that Ronnie was the BPA. If the BPA was a lineman or a QB I would have been just as quick to take them instead.

Anyone who remembers Wannestadt continually telling us how well the o-line graded out over the past couple of years can realize how coaching can improve the position. These clowns were complacent under Wanny, they also had zero confidence in the system. How any coach can keep preaching how bad it will be to turn the ball over and that he just wants to keep it close is a clown. You preach that and then turn the ball over and/or go down big your team realizes they have absolutely no chance. Everytime a Fins team had a TO the past few years, there was a collective Oh *uck. from the players.

As far as the RB situation maybe Nick just looked at last season and realized that you need quality at the skill positions and as much of it as you can get. Maybe, just maybe he doesn't want his season to go down the tubes because one player takes a bad step in practice.

Its obvious that Saban and Houck dont think the OL is as bad as we thought it was.

I never thought our OL talent was bad. I thought after Wanny left it was painfully obvious he was not doing his job. Further not having a real HB running behind any OL will generally hurt them.

He didnt do very much in the draft or FA to address this apparent weakness. So he must know something we dont know.

IMO there will be a definite improvement if only because it couldnt be any worst than last year.

:cooldude:

That too.Anyone who played in that offense last year deserves a Mulligan.

Something else no one in this thread has yet mentioned, no on is hurt this year on the Oline! McIntosh is recovered and playing on two good ankles. Carey and Hadnot are in the off season program with the rest of the team. James has gotten to know the guys on either side of him. McDougle is an addition who is a seasoned veteran.

Not only did we have a lousy Oline coaching staff last year but we were trying to rebuild after loosing Nails, Ruddy, (who was that RG????), and Wade. The leadership was non-existent and that is perhaps where the lack of firm coaching showed up the most!

With the Houck/Davis (don't forget him, he is going to be a big help with the Oline too) regime in place, with McIntosh and Smith healthy, with McIntosh, James, McKinney, Hadnot, St. Clair, Carey, Whitely, and Smith returning from last year, with Pape getting some pro reps in NFLE, and with the additions of Cook, McDougle, and Alabi, we SHOULD look better than at any time last year!

I will agree that an aggressive nature is probably more of a personal trait, although I think technique is more important. However, ask somebody who's been through military boot camp if focus can't be taught.

They can't improve....they suck....you saw them last year...that's all the proof you should need....we need all new linemen or we are screwed.

For as bad as the OL was last season, I've spent little time worried about it since Saban and Houck arrived.

I guess I'm just confident that I've seen the very worst that it can get, and know that under Houck things will improve to at least average this year. I won't begin to figure out who will be playing where along the OL, since it seems almost wide open to me.

Get a group working together as a unit this year, then next you can look at getting a better LT, or C, or whatever.

For the record, I think Feeley should have another chance behind an improved OL, with a real HB, and a real OC and gameplan every week. If he fails this year, then I've no qualms about seeing him demoted or gone. Why some are so opposed to giving AJ a chance is beyond me.

Is it just the "Fielder Effect" in action? The fear of being stuck with an average or below QB for 4-5 years?

Saban won't be making that mistake people! Only Wanny was foolish enough to think it could work. :shakeno:
