Marino suing the NFL over concussions....

Is it just me, or is it only ex players who aren't doing well financially are the ones joining suit? I find it odd that at his lowest point financially is when he decided to join the suit.

Also it's hogwash that you didn't know that there would be long term effects from playing football. I got a small concussion on my first play of contact football, and I broke tibia and wrist (twice) playing. This is the reason I stopped playing, because at 16 (I thought) I didn't want to end up an old and decrepit mess at a relatively young age.

what's so great about john elway...had he not been able to sign peyton manning they'd be calling for his head in denver by now...he's been carried by the peyton manning decision

I think many of you are missing the REAL ISSUE here. Concussion is just the buzz word because due to the recent suicides.. it gets the attention on the public and will garner the most support, But the REAL issue is how the NFL institutionally created an environment that was in the best interest of making money and not in the best interest of the players. When you have "TEAM DOCTORS" that are paid by the TEAM and are offered BONUSES for the number of players they sign off ass healthy and ready to play.... that is an obvious CONFLICT OF INTEREST and what was happening is that Team Doctors were clearing players to play (to get the bonuses) when those players were not fully recovered. This goes beyond concussions but applies every other injury. This is why many players seek second opinions outside of Team Doctors because they found out that the team doctors couldn't be trusted because they didn't the players best interest in mind. Their jobs were to get players back on the field. And historically, if a players was cleared to play by team doctors and decided not to play... he would be viewed as soft and not a team player. I think the NFL should be sued for creating this type of environment. OJ McDuffie has a well publicized lawsuit against the dolphins because they misdiagnosed his turf toe, cleared him to play and he career was cut short because of it... the NFL should be ashamed.

That ended quickly

Dan Marino, the legendary Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback, intends to withdraw from a lawsuit against the NFL for concussions.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday that the former quarterback joined 14 other players to sue the league.

According to a source, Marino, 52, and his lawyers will be in discussions to withdraw from the lawsuit that was filed in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia.

“It was never Marino’s intention to initiate litigation in this case, but to ensure that in the event he had adverse health consequences down the road, he would be covered with health benefits. They are working to correct the error,” a source said to the Sun-Sentinel.

Marino and his lawyers are attempting to discover how Marino’s name was joined to the lawsuit. Marino has said in the past he had two reported concussions during his 17-year career.

Marino’s withdrawal from the lawsuit could come as soon as later on Tuesday, depending on how the discussions go between the two sides.

Hm. I wonder what happened. In any case, less press is better press when trying to get a job in an NFL organization that is run by its owners. Not good to be a party to a suit against a prospective employer.

Was told Marino had been client of plaintiffs' firm "7-8 months". Firm just filed for clients who signed contracts but had not filed.

Typical of Dan here is footage of him farting CBS postgame show

I hope those people were actually Dan Marino otherwise :bobdole: if he was serious about an NFL job.

And they rightfully should be. While I've got mixed emotions about this whole issue as it involves Dan, the mere fact that he would choose to go public at a critical time in his discussions with the Fins when apparently being stretched financiallly speaks to his judgement or lack thereof. You just don't bite the hand that's fed and may well feed you again! Sorry, but that's just prudent common sense -and while I wish Marino well, I don't think I'd want someone that devoid of it having critical decision-making input for the franchise. So thanks but no thanks (I reluctantly guess :idk:)

He wanted to make sure later if something developed with him he would have medical benefits. Was just on XM Sirius radio.

Well...if its true then thats some bad luck PR for Marino.

Nothing wrong with putting a place holder on money in the event 10 years down the road he does suffer from issues.

I don't know if that technically falls under the definition of hypocrisy, maybe some new information came to light over the past year. I'm pretty sure every single person posting in this thread is doing things that they know carries inherent risk, like driving for example, and if Toyota was knowingly putting unsafe brakes on your car you would sue them if it caused an accident. Whether you have good brakes or bad brakes you are knowingly taking a risk by driving so the knowing of a certain degree of risk doesn't absolve the manufacturer, or the league in this case, from negligence.

So if you sue Toyota for putting your life in danger above and beyond the accepted risks of driving are you now a hypocrite also?

I understand where you're going with the analogy but I don't think it's the same. 'Me suing Toyota because their car didn't prevent me from getting paralyzed in an accident', is probably a better analogy to this situation.
