Marino suing the NFL over concussions....

You guys are absolutely ignorant! I use to be indifferent on concussions and brain trauma until I had The Refrigerator Perry as a passenger on my flight. He literally sat there like a bobble head doll and pissed himself during flight. To the point when they strapped him to his aisle chair he was piss soaked but waiving at his fans. The issue isn't if the danger of concussions was known. The issue is teams made a conscious effort to hide the diagnosis from players, putting them back on the field immediately after the injury exposing them to more harm.

Players like Marino gave it their all exposing themselves to great danger! All the while billionaires sit in luxury boxes repeating the reward of others labor. For decades the league ignored head trauma and hid it from players. That is why they should and will pay! Absolutely amazing Dan Marino is now a villain! Give me a break anything any of these players are awarded will be pennies on the interest the owners earn from a single season.

Did the players know there was a risk? Absolutely! But what they didn't know is the severity of their injury because it was being hidden from them.

That is so sad about The Fridge Ryan... Concussions are really no joke.

JDW: it is also mine. i want to see some further proof on this, but. its not off base at all.

this is NOT because of the cbs gig, its the fact it was the probably the straw that broke the camels back. a couple years ago, danny fortune was all but whiped out from a VERY bad investment he went all in on. it cost him his money and his mansion and most of his other hi dollar assets.

then came the LOVE CHILD with the long time affair that came to light. that cost big money on several fronts. and NOW........., his CBS gig. danny is on tilt.

there almost seems to be a kharma going on here. i remember a LOT of talk from players and fans back in the day saying that danny was a real arse. you couldnt stand in the same room with his ego and he was NOTORIOUS most of the time for blowing off fans and autographs on a REGULAR basis. at a paid show or team commitment, he was all smiles and charm. in the real world, sounds like it may be just the opposite. as much as i love dan marino, the best qb of all time and the dolphins mega legend, i havnt been so admired with dan marino the person.

anything can happen in a persons marriage. i myself am on wife #2. however, this thing with him and the affair and the love child, this wasnt a 10 month thing that got out of hand, this was going on for many years, and probably still would be had he not been caught, all while clair, his cancer stricken wife who he had been with him since first year of college was at home with danny's 307 children, one a special needs kid.

that makes me wince a bit. and there were lots of rumors of dans infidelities back in the day, but i, like thousands of other loyal fin fans thought it was haters and a biased media.

where theres smoke......... . and now we know that ONE affair is true so it makes one revisit those rumors. either he is getting a visit from mr. kharma OR danny is living a bad country music song.

but back to the point of the thread, DANNY IS BROKE and has been for some time now. his reputation tarnished in the business world, his personal life and now his tv profession.

i truly hope this is not what it appears to be. i really do.

I had herad Marino lost a boatload on a bad investment... Which is a bad break and it sucks. I really hope this isn't what it appears to be either in terms of his financial situation. But to find out one of the guys I grew up idolizing in sports (and the reason I became a Dolphins fan when I was a little kid) appeared to have two faces, fooling around on his wife and treating fans like that... That breaks my heart. Yet I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I sincerely hope that Dan gets his personal and financial houses in order and he can move on and better himself as a person. God speed Dan.

sue don shula for never getting you a running game dan...i hear his restaurants are doing quite well

smh...role model my ass

After having had the chance to sleep on this, I still am conflicted, see both sides and don't know what to think :idk:

I might be confused. I don't see how the NFL can hide the "concussion issue" from players. Concussions aren't conditions that are exclusive to the NFL or for football. Were players only allowed to see NFL doctors under their healthcare? I mean...if you have a PCP or someone you go see routinely outside of the team doctors, it seems you would know. I don't see how the NFL can insulate players from knowledge about concussion given all of the evidence from boxers and similar contact sports. I'm not arguing either way, i"m just saying....why is it the NFL's responsibility to educate you? Players said all of the time that they would get a concussion and not say anything or just shake it off knowing that something was wrong...but would tough it out. Sounds like to me they knew it wasn't right but went in anyway because they didn't want to lose their sport/let their team down.

So does that mean i can sue my employer for damages due to staring at a computer screen for 10 hours a day causing me to get headaches and having to wear contacts?

Also, I have Parkinsons symptoms at 38 years old. More than likely from head trauma playing football. Maybe I should sue Miramar High School.

^ misses slavery.

Wow..your really going to go there?...I just get sick of a sue happy society looking for every chance to grab something they didn't earn. I have no problem with legitimate cases where people are truly wronged....but sueing over hot coffee at mcdonalds....over not realizing breathing smoke into your lungs was bad...and yes, over not realizing playing a contact sport could be dangerous to your long term health is just plain stupidity and a money grab.

I'm quite sure Marino felt the injuries he endured getting paid millions to play a kids game....then proceeded to make millions for over another decade as a talking head taking advantage of the sport.....now he wants to make more because he finally realizes the dangers involved...give me a break.

We'll be watching flag football in the near future.

very possible...it's only gonna get worse...nfl needs to put something in the next cba about assumed risk...of course getting that by the players association is gonna be a massive hurdle...still these kids assume the risk now a days when they come in the league and it doesn't stop anyone from doing their damnist to get in the league...

this stuffs well past rediculous now with all the litigation...

Eh, I figure, that's what the courts are for. I'm not going to worry about it too much. I don't think it's a sign of the fall of our society and the impending apocalypse. I'll let other people set themselves on fire in protest.

Man.....

Marino is getting killed in the press over this.

:bobdole:

Talk about kissing any chance at working for any NFL team good-bye.

ConvenientTruth; and his notable meltdown on the CBS set....[/QUOTE said:
What is the story with his meltdown on the CBS set? I haven't heard that story. What happened?

I fully believe that the league knew much more about the severity of head trauma/concussions and the long term effects well before all of these "suits" started to happen.

The 2 issues I see are: A. Would players still take that risk knowing these effects (as millions of young kids continue to step on football fields every year) and B. Can it be proven "how much" the league knew about head injuries and how long ago did they know how severe it would eventually be.

Make no mistake, I'm not on the side of the billionaire owners of this league who exploit their players with non guaranteed contracts and gladiator like play and fans to exorbitant prices to park and eat and then want a half a billion dollar tax favor from those same people to help them build a stadium to fatten their pockets. However at what point are these players going to take a real stand against the NFL and contact football at all age levels? This move by Marino seems like a straight up "cash grab" and that I am not a fan of.

Truth be told, the owners take too much heat for this. Remedying this needs to start at the Little League/High School levels. Educate players and parents of the long term issues of playing football, make them sign waivers in regards to contact football and if they still decide to let their kids play, then all liability is on their hands. I know for a fact education on this won't stop everybody, especially inner city youths who depend on a sport like football as a way out of unfortunate childhood circumstances and potential adult imprisonment . . . but it will decrease the number far more than these multiple suits will.

Eeh didnt he talk quite recently about how he knew the risks etc just like the other players? and how he didnt wanna take action?

Cynical, but did he lose the cbs health plan? Id grab every penny I coukd as well

At the beginning of last season they were talking about the concussion lawsuit on CBS and he stated that he knew the risks of getting involved in the NFL when it came to injuries and concussions. That was why he wasn't a part of the lawsut to begin with. I take issue with the fact that less than a year ago he was saying how this was known when he was playing and that all players knew the risks. If they are adding his name to the lawsuit to help get more money, then that is an issue as well. If I am the prosecuitor, I am showing his footage from a year ago when he was on CBS and showing that this is just a money grab and that he knew about the long term effects because he stated so in the past.

Here is an article with a youtube clip of him saying so as well: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24579491/dan-marino-on-concussions-in-2013-players-know-what-the-risks-are

Of course, this lawsuit all but ended any chance of him joining the Dolphins any time in the near future in a John Elway role or really any type of role for that matter. I can't see Ross hiring someone who is currently suing the NFL. I am sure the NFL higher-ups have already called Ross and probably told him that. It wouldn't look good at all for the NFL and right now Ross probably feels he needs to keep the NFL happy with all the other crap that we are going through right now.

Our country is in the shape it's in because of lawsuits such as this. I guess because the owners and NFL have money they should dish it out. Heck, I've had neck and back surgeries due to football in HS and pop Warner, I guess I should sue too.

Lawsuits should be for a identified negligence, not for dudes who are living well and want a piece of the action. Unless someone tells me otherwise, I have never heard Dan say he has had any ill affects from concussions. What's next, lawsuits for a jacked up Achilles?

No other nation in the world is as litigious as us, and many people reap the benefits, but many suffer the consequences be it by paying up the arse for insurance or by direct responsibility.

Very true. Over 90% of the WORLDs lawyers are citizens of the good old USA.

There's a lot of confusion over this lawsuit. Marino isn't suing because he got a concussion. He's suing because the NFL policy at the time had doctors clearing people for play that should never have been back on the field so fast. The NFL had a financial incentive to minimize the danger of concussions because if players had mandatory periods of exclusion from play due to concussions, maximum team size would have to be expanded. The NFL maximized their profits by sacrificing players' long term health.
