MERGED: Dolphins to hire Dan Marino as special advisor

Good read on the situation. Did Marino and Harbaugh have any kind of relationship when they were both in the league together?

Not directly that I know, beyond being division rivals who were both tough guys and ****y guys.

However, if you'll follow me for a minute, consider this. Jim Harbaugh last played in the NFL in 2001, for the Carolina Panthers. This is probably where he met Greg Roman -- currently the 49ers' offensive coordinator (and before that Stanford's offensive coordinator) -- who was then an offensive line assistant. Roman had been hired while Dom Capers was the head coach of the Panthers, and after the 2001 season (after which Harbaugh himself was released), Roman left (was fired, more than likely) for the Houston Texans, who were then being coached by, you guessed it, Dom Capers. This same Houston Texans staff Roman joined included none other than Vic Fangio, who is currently the defensive coordinator of the 49ers (and before that, Stanford's defensive coordinator).

But really it goes back to Dom Capers. He hired Roman, and then Fangio. And who does Dom Capers lead back to? Bill Polian, who hired Capers to be the first head coach of the Panthers.

Are Polian and Marino close? That's hard to tell. But look at this:

If nothing else, Harbaugh is going to respect Marino, and he has an unbroken chain of personal recommendations leading back to him, from Roman/Fangio to Capers to Polian to Jim Kelly to Marino.

I honestly think your digging a little to deep into the Kelly picture. Dan and Jim are close friends and Polian was the GM when Kelly was the QB for the Bills. I know you totally killed it with the Richie Incognito dad story, but I think your reading too much into that. But I'm with you 100% on bringing in Harbaugh/ Malzahn. Preferably Malzahn.

What does Dan Marino bring to the table, honestly? The dude
never struck me as a mental heavy lifter.

I like it. This will help as Marino learns the business. The best Dolphin of all time is back.
I don't think Marino has any commitment to learn the business at all.

I am soooo happy to have Dan back in the fold with Miami. This is great for fins fans.

Skape asked me if there was a connection. I was trying to see if there was one is all, and that's the best I could come up with. Take it for what it's worth.

The truth is that the NFL is a very small town (so to speak) and everyone pretty much knows everyone else or at least has dirt on everyone. You don't need to do it by resume. People meet each other, or know each other through connections that are difficult to find (agents/managers, for example). It was interesting to try and trace it, though. I could have cut out the middleman and gone directly from Roman to Polian (and therefore to Marino), but it was interesting to see how much of Harbaugh's coaching tree branched off from Capers.

Capers, by the way, got his first break into professional football coaching the defensive backs on a USFL team whose head coach was Jim "playoffs?" Mora (who was later coach with the Colts when Polian was there). The GM of that USFL team? Carl Peterson.

Like I said, it's a small town.

Dan's a people person. He's well respected and liked around the league. He's kind of like a big brother.

You can go to him when your down and say, hey Dan, they moved me to a smaller cubicle at work. And he'll say, Yeah, I know what that's like, look at me I never won a Super Bowl.

Dan Marino set to accept a position within Dolphins organization

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/...olphins-organization-20140823,0,6818070.story

The Miami Dolphins have spent months discussing a role within the organization for Dan Marino, and it appears he's finally accepted one.
Following Saturday's 25-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys the Sun-Sentinel confirmed Marino will accept a position within the organization, but couldn't get the specifics of his role.
According to NBC6, the Hall of Fame quarterback will accept a position as owner Steve Ross' and CEO Tom Garfinkel's special adviser The news station claims an announcement will be made next week.

I think we all saw this one coming. Good to have Danny Boy on board .

Dan's a people person? Ask the cbs crew he worked with what type of person Dan was.

Shortly after Ireland is fired the dolphins are no longer poisonous!

Ireland was like Wormtounge on this team, day by day sapping the will of the staff, players and fans while slowly weakening the franchise with mediocre drafts. Even though its just an advisory role I think this team can now get back to attracting excellent talent both on the personnel side and player side. Marino's new role is basically the beginning of the post Ireland era.

I like this news!

2 + 2 does not equal 17. Some of you guys have rushed to assumptions about Dan being Stephen Ross' right hand guy for recruiting Jim Harbaugh. I think that you are putting the cart before the horse.
I just think that the greatest Dolphin of all time was unemployed (getting fat and probably bored) and Ross was smart enough to show some respect, get him back on the payroll and listen to what Dan sees going on, like a consigliere pertaining to the team. I still expect Ross is solidly behind Philbin who appears to have done a good job getting the team ready, upgrading the coaching staff and working well with new GM Denns Hickey. Any speculation about Harbaugh must wait depending on how the season unfolds. I remain optimistic for a good year, making the playoffs. I am also of the view that for all his natural coaching talent, Harbaugh appears to be a major prick who is difficult to work with. Be careful what you wish for.

To me, it doesn't matter the capacity he's involved. Hopefully it's a meaningful one, but to just have our childhood and/or adulthood hero back with our beloved Fins, should mean a lot to most of us..

Good Luck Dan!!! Hope you succeed in the office as much as you did on the field. I enjoyed growing up watching you play. Now lets make this new en devour something special.
