MERGED:ESPN reporting the Dolphins are trying to clear cap space for Simon

I think you are confusing my language. In our defense, we have a DT and NT. Im talking about ONLY the DT position, not the NT position. Right now, we have Holliday, Wright, Shaw, Zgonina and Vickerson as true DTs. Traylor and Chester are the only two guys that really have the size to play NT but Zgonina is listed as a backup there and same with Vickerson.

Corey Simon would be a DT, not a NT, and therefore be playing one position on our Dline, the DT position, along with Holliday, Vickerson, and Wright. Therefore we would have 4 guys who are DT's on our team when you really need 2-3. Who would be the odd man out?

For the FUTURE of the team, not carrying Vickerson or Wright would hurt us. However for this year, Simon would be a good upgrade.
NT in a 4-3 defense is just a handle, not the actual position it is in a 3-4. But I get what you mean, I just can't see both Wright and Vickerson working out. Also having pass rushing DT's as well as huge maulers gives us alot of versatility on defense. And isn't versatility the name of Saban's game?

Uhhh... still no verification of this story.

It aint on SportsCenter. Where did you hear this? Did ANYONE else hear this?

Let's not get ahead of ourselves...
I believe it was Dan Davis that reported it on ESPN radio during the Herd.

Well if thats the case, then good for you guys...Ive been reading O-line is STILL a very BIG question mark.

Only because they have to prove it over a prolonged period of time, but we stole Hudson Houck from you and he is molding this into a fine unit I think will greatly surprise everyone by years end.

Yea the Dolphins are going to be upset if they waste a 7th round pick by picking up someone better than the 7TH ROUND PICK!

Vickerson has been playing very well so far this year. It doesnt matter what round he was picked in. When you have a youngster with a lot of potential developing you need to take that into consideration for the long term goals and plans of your team. Im not saying he is the future at DT for us and im not saying a 7th round pick is gold, Im saying he has been playing well and with our aging Dline, im sure Saban has a long term goal or vision for what players and what type of players and what percentage of the salary cap he wants to use for the Dline.

To me the signing of C.Simon would help free up our going
after a QB or LT in the draft next year.

Good thread all, I'm off to work, catch you all later. Keep it up, been a while since there has been a good one.:)

Good DTs are hard to find in the NFL these days. SImon is a premier DT. Our draft DTs are long shots at best. Simon can anchor this line for 4 or 5 more years. We should get him if we can make it work. Our current DTs are suspect, and Chester might never return. You have to spend money to be good.

Simon sucks. People keep seeing that he is a probowler and he is hyped. But in reality this guy is soft against the run and benefited from the eagles massive blitz schemes. He is not fast enough or quick enough off the snap to cause major pass rushing concern (ie 10+ sacks a year) and he is not strong enough to hold his ground or blow up the line against the run. He is constantly pushed around and takes plays off. He is trying to draw a big contract that he is simply not worth. Yes he is a product of the system and yes he is too much money.

Stole? I think you PAID for HH. I have tremendous respect for the man, I do, you have credentials like him- he deserves respect. But STOLE is a word I wouldnt use to describe it..as said PAID for him.

IMHO: It will take HH a solid 2-3 years in order to get the OLINE HE WANTS! Thats going to be accomplished by drafting and free agency pick ups. Mcintosh was let go by HH, the remaining players on the Oline are not HH players. They are players that were there before his time. As said, he needs 2-3 years in order to bring his players and cultivate them the way he wants.

Also, YES COACHING IS A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT, but you also got to have players that will buy into scheme, and have the ability. It took HH 2-3 years to finally give Drew Brees a solid line, and one of those moves was releasing Damion. Call it luck or VERY good intuition, but who would have thought Shane Olivea would turn into the player he is, or Nick Hardwick ( a walk on at Purdue), also getting Mike Goff, and the old as the sun Roman Oben...what Im trying to say is YES HH is a very good pick up for you guys..no doubt. But the players currently in ARE NOT HIS PLAYERS!

Yep.. I've read enough.

Where hasnt he? He has looked good in drills and has come a long way. He has developed and progressed a lot in the one on one drills.
I wanted him cut the first week of camp because of his BS and he has actually suprised and come a long way. He went from my cut list to challenging for a roster spot and has shown a lot more promise than most 7th round draft picks.

With how he has progressed, he has made me think that he might be a solid backup this year and has a shot at a starting role in 2006 if he continues to progress.

But I guess in your all encompassing knowledge, you dont need to state any facts. You just sign players without looking to the future of the team and without any regard for the salary cap, right? I mean all teams win superbowls by just signing the highest priced FA's and not developing their youngsters right? I mean its what the Pats and Eagles did to get there last year, so it must work. :smackhead

man this is great news i hope we sign him our d-line will get a big boost plus he has said he wants to come back home and he would love to play for miami.

We will know very soon about where simon goes. As of right now he is "interested" in Miami! Who isn't? Who wouldn't want to play in the sunshine state? We can only wait forthe signing.

I was referring more to the future than the right now, many of our D-lineman are long in the tooth, I could see Simon being part of a really good team over the next four or five years, you can't say that about many of our D-lineman.
