MERGED:ESPN reporting the Dolphins are trying to clear cap space for Simon

This is Randy's style and forte...

I think it'll happen and by the way those two DTs are 5th and 7th round picks, you can't exactly bank on them. Basically we're just giving up Jeff Zgonina to do this...

But I thought we would never run the 3-4 because Saban never ran it in college.;)

I believe I stated numerous times we dont have the personnel to run a 3-4 base defense at the start of last year.

And right now, we are not running a 3-4 base defense.

I'll search for some of my old threads.

Anyways my post had nothing to do with the 3-4 defense....... dont confuse when I say DT and NT that I am specifically talking about the 3-4, because im not.

EDIT: Heres a good thread from March of this year BEFORE we signed Carter. I was pretty much spot on wasnt I?

http://www.finheaven.com/boardvb2/showpost.php?p=1018872&postcount=25

I even stated BEFORE we signed Carter that although he was a DT, he would play DE opposide of Taylor..... which if you see now, he is.

I also stated that in our 3-4 sets, Holliday would play opposite of our DE, Carter, which he is.

Just to clarify, we have a DE-NT-DT-OE which is Carter, Traylor, Holliday and JT and in a 3-4 you have a DT-NT-DE which is Holliday, Traylor, and Carter with JT/Bowens dropping back.

Actually what's great about Simon is that I think he could play 3-4 DE because he has a very strong quick burst, although I'm not sure how good he is around the end. In the 4-3 however he's great because he penetrates gaps which is Saban's style for run stuffing. To Saban, Simon could be his Chad Lavalais in college.

Simon would basically play what Holliday does. But you need to think long term. Personally although its an upgrade, I dont think for the price its a worthy upgrade.

I'm going to have to be the lone voice of disquiet on this one. I've been hearing and reading quite a lot lately about personnel people saying Simon is a money-only guy who takes plays off. I sure hope that isn't true. He seems like the kind of signing that backfires, regardless of his huge talent.
Now do you honestly think Saban would allow this to happen to this team from a player...NO way. He'll play and play for the right reasons or not at all I'm willing to wager. Sabans not a push over like WANNY was.
;)

Simon's production has declined steadily since his rookie year. That's not a good sign for the amount of money he'd likely receive. He won't be much help for us in stopping the run. He will help provide a pass rush from the interior of our DL, making us less reliant on using blitzes. Overall I believe the Dolphins need a passrush DT because Chester and Traylor and purely run stuffers. It's a tough call and I'm glad I don't have to make it.

Hmm..interesting...IMHO- WHY? Besides possibility of cap hell, WHY? Apologies for not knowing your cap situation, but this guy will demand some $$$, even if he does re-structure. Also, from what Ive heard / read about Simon, he was a "product of the system" I HATE THAT WORD, but that is what ive heard..

Let me ask you this...You bring in Simon, but isnt the defensive line ALREADY a strength? Does bringing Simon in help the O-line?

This would be weird, and once again thats IMHO.

As I always say, you dont strengthen the position your strong at...you address the positions that are WEAK!

Our O-line has enough talent and is starting to gel, adding a big time talent like Simon to our D-line helps us shut down the LT's of the world.

This team has some secondary concerns and a very questionable QB situation, other than that this is a talented team which will cause alot more problems for its opponents than most realize right now.

Addressing the last statement of your post, we have a weakness at DT, adding an impact DT that is still young is a great idea.

A young DT veteran that could bulk up and has shown he has the agility and speed to get to the passer. Sounds pretty good for me, especially if this is a two years until Superbowl run plan by Saban. Plus I seriously think in the next two years either Zach or JT will not be on our defense for cap reasons, regardless of wether we sign Simon or not.

ill say it...

Simon is a very good player. better than any DT you have on your team. he would be a GREAT addition, IF you can make room for him. he wants A LOT of money. he refused to sign a "franchise" offer, (average top 5 money).

No he still penetrates pretty well, but you have to also realize somethign else. It's not like Simon has consistently been playing next to a guy of J.T.'s caliber throughout his career. He had Hugh Douglass at his best for a while, and now a continously hobbled Kearse. With Traylor/Chester swallowing the double teams on run down and Taylor/Carter destroying the tackles, Simon could have a monster season :fire:

Yes your right he didn't want to sign a franchise tag, but that might be because of long-term concerns for him. Players want to get that big contract around 26-28, 29 already begins to get into a teams head. His agent said that the Eagles didn't offer that 5 year, 34m deal everyone believed was offered.

You see that #90 spot right there in the middle with a guy named J.Z.

That'll be replaced by a C.S. pretty soon...

Dont get me wrong, Simon would be a great upgrade to the DT position, however salary cap wise I dont see how its possible unless he takes a MUCH cheaper first year than what the eagles offered him and his cap hit is minimal this year. I would rather put the money elsewhere and still give Manny Wright and Kevin Vickerson a shot to be our starter at DT next year.

with Corey Simon, our line would be:

Taylor, Simon, Traylor, Carter.

Then u got Holliday who could be there for depth, in case someone gets hurt. I would probably cut Bowens and Zgonina (make room for Simon, plus they dont play a lot...sure Bowens had like 6 sacks, but maybe u could use him on 3rd downs)
