Didnt we just sign Bowens to an extension? Bowens is the only other guy on the team who can play OE. We need a backup for JT. If he was going to be cut, it was 3 months ago. We cant cut Bowens now. If JT ever got hurt, we would need to change our base defense. The OE position is what makes our D stand out. You need that hybrid player. Jt and Bowens are the only starters on the team that can be that hybrid player.

A young DT veteran that could bulk up and has shown he has the agility and speed to get to the passer. Sounds pretty good for me, especially if this is a two years until Superbowl run plan by Saban. Plus I seriously think in the next two years either Zach or JT will not be on our defense for cap reasons, regardless of wether we sign Simon or not.

Monaaaaaaaaaaaay. Also, if its a 2-year run plan, Simon is 28 isnt he? Agewise Vickerson and Wright are young and will be developed in 2 years, Simon right now is in his prime. In 2 years IF we are contenders, we will be in the same exact situation we are now with Simon 30, Carter and Taylor both over 30. And we might not have Vickerson and Wright because they didnt get playing time because we signed DT's ahead of them.

Simon is a very good player. better than any DT you have on your team. he would be a GREAT addition, IF you can make room for him. he wants A LOT of money. he refused to sign a "franchise" offer, (average top 5 money).

Well said CH. Im glad im not the only voice of reason. Not every player in the NFL wants to come to Miami for the vet min. If he does come here, he will be accepting a lower offer than Philly and Baltimore..... both SB contenders.

I wouldn't say both are gone for sure, but it's likely one of the two is gone my guess being Traylor with his age. You can't just expect Wright and Vickerson to develop like that and not sign a player due to that. That's a baseball mentality where you have time to raise a guy on a farm team. Football is a sport where you basically have to go for it every year and use your youth at the same time. Chester is also a possibility to go next year too, the point is you know Wright and Vickerson will get their chance.

Traylor's backup is Vickerson for now although he's not a NT. Tell you the truth Wright isn't very much a NT either. His base really isn't that low like NTs and he's 6-6. Usually your NT is much shorter than that.

I agree with Traylor and Holliday being gone next year... they were signed as 1 year vet fixes. However I fail to see how we can sign him given the bonus he wants. By my calculations, which are pretty rough, we are RIGHT up against the salary cap. I would like to see Clumpy update the salary cap page and his numbers however.

I dont think we can fit a mil + cap number onto this year unless we made a few good cuts that didnt cost us dead money and Simon worked with us.

PS: Incase someone else chimes in, Cutting Madison or Reggie Howard isnt the answer THIS year.

It's those huge back end loaded contracts that put a team in cap hell, so I understand your reservations about signing a guy like this that "WANT"S TO GET PAAAAAAAAAAID!!". But I think he could step in and help us solidify a position that has been up in the air since last season when Chester and Timbo went down.

You are exactly correct, Wright and Vickerson are more suited for a DT role. Simon also is more suited for a DT role. If you sign Simon, you basically negate your draft picks. Simon would want a 4-5 year deal here..... essentially it could be a 3 year deal with a backloaded year 4 and 5 so we can move him after 3 years..... anyways the point is if you sign him and we keep him for 3 years, you have Wright and Vickerson sitting for another 3 years.

If Wright or Vickerson have the potential to be a good starting DT, you need to test that potential. They are both signed on rookie contracts and are cheap and dont cost anything against the salary cap. Thats what good teams do. Look at the Eagles and the Pats salary cap then look at ours, it makes you sick how much certain players of ours cost against the cap and it makes you sick to see how good players on the Eagles and Pats dont make much at all.

You dont make it to the SB by overpaying for FAs and not developing your young players. We invested 2 draft picks in DTs. I would at least like to give one a shot at starting here next year.

That's absolutely true by the way Filter, but remember Jermaine Haley? A 3-man rotation at DT/NT is HUGE. I don't know how much longer we'll have Chester, so if you think about it within 2 years even if we have Chester, one of the draft picks will be getting plenty of playing time. It also depends if we switch to a 3-4, where Vickerson might switch to the LDE backup.

Unfortuately for Mueller he inherited some bad contracts that take up a good amount of cap room and might prohibit us from making some moves that we might have made if we had the space.

Look at Philly's secondary cap number and then look at ours. It will make you throw up how their starters take up half the cap room that our starters do and they are all pro bowlers.
