MERGED:exactly the reason NOT to take a rb at #2/The Ronnie Contract

Why do you think wide receiver represents better value? What position affects the outcome of the game more? RB or WR?

IMO, that's an easy question to answer. A great RB will have a bigger impact upon the game than a great wide receiver.

lets start that in a new post. thats an entirely diffrent argument all together lol. i did not specify a position with #2, but typically there is greater value at other positions with the #2 pick than rb. wr is considered one of them.

It wouldn't matter what position we took at #2. Running back doesn't make any difference, any position at #2 is going to cost a HUGE amount of money. Also, I hope France comes up with something because I really don't want Ronnie Brown missing training camp AND maybe holding out the entire 2005 season. I would be OUTRAGED if that happened... :fire: :fire: :fire:

When has Chambers ever dropped a pass that matters??? NEVER, thats what ive seen for 4 years . Ive seen Cris Carter drop a TD, same with Booker....NEVER Chris. Everyone drops an easy ball once in awhile because they are still human. But to say that Chris "short arms" the ball is ridiculous....he catches it. Put Chris in Minny or St. Louis and you'll see the 1000 yd. receiver we've been waiting for. Dont forget, he's NEVER had a good WR NEXT TO him until now(Booker). I think he will break the 1000 yd mark this season.......then everyone can shut up about him not being a #1 receiver. I'm not saying he's top 10, i'm just saying that him and Braylon are not different at all in terms of ABILITY, cHambers is actually faster too. Why would we draft another WR when we DO NOT HAVE ANOTHER RB????

See my earlier post. I'm not worried.

That OL wasn't great. And our OL will improve by just gaining experience and with better coaching. If it remains in the same shambles it was even a "special" RB is screwed.

Sure, defense is important, but the point is you don't NEED a "special" RB.
i didnt say it was great. but they played as a unit. makes alot of difference.

Typically, the highest value is placed on the player at the top of the Draft Board.

Not only was Ronnie Brown the highest value, his position was the greatest area of need.

Of course, a #2 draft pick will want to be paid #2 value. A brash player like Edwards would be more demanding for money than the softer spoken, high character role player like Brown. Part of his appeal is that he would be easily signable.

dolphinz34 u said it yourself, he doesnt drop passes and he's usually underthrown.....thats all that matters. Taking Ronnie at 2 is better than taking Braylon at 2, end of story.

Exactly, and since our line this year will have spent more time playing together and are expected to receive better coaching they are more likely to play as a unit. So we are less likely to NEED a "special" RB which was my original point.

Of course it's better to have great players than mediocre players, but in the salary cap era you can't afford to have great players everywhere. So, you get by having lower paid players at some positions. History shows us that RB is one of the positions where you can do that.

actually recent history shows us that QB is a position where you can do that, the last 6 superbowls where won by non-elite QBs, brady, johnson, dilfer, warner, etc....

while only 3 times in the last 13 years did a team with only a mediocre rushing attack...

2002, 2004 pats and the 1995 49ers... besides that youve had backs like terrell davis, emmit smith, jamal lewis, marshall faulk, dorsey levens, corey dillon, etc...

i dont know you can argue it either way, in the end our coach felt a RB was that important to take at 2, ya'll will have to deal with it...

That's not what I was arguing. We took Ronnie and that's it...it's not like he's a bad player or an extreme reach. You know I was more enamored with Mike Williams than Braylon anyways. I think his attitude and character will be very much like a TO or Keyshawn.

Dropping passes and allowing the defender to make a play on a pass in which he could have easily out jumped him are 2 totally different things. I'm not saying he's bad, can't catch, or run routes. He just doesn't catch the ball at it's highest point...he sort of cradles it. That's all...has nothing to do with who we should have drafted, value, etc. I was just making a comment about something I've noticed.

but him cradling the ball can happen at most what??? once a game at most?? he's a borderline 1000 yard receiver up to now, it's actually pretty incredible that with the Garbage Offensive system we've had the past 4-5 years, this guy still got us over 70 catches,850 yards a season, and 6+ TD's. I also like Williams over Edwards but for our system Chambers is Fine, Williams would've been a possesion WR and we already have Booker and Thompson to fill that role.

my point is that in my opinion running backs are not worth the huge contracts. i believe those are a better value at cb and wr, and qb IF IF IF you have a true franchise qb. if our line blocks good this year, you are gonna see morris and harris be just as productive as ronnie brown and compare their salaries. just look at how denver and kc plug anyone in back there and get yards. anyone want to bet right now maurice clarrett gains more yards this season than ronnie brown?

I wanted us to be able to trade down and get more picks. We have several holes to fill/upgrade, but that didn't happen. So the next best athlete was Brown. It happened to be an area we are weak in. To answer you question about the OL...Do you really think our OL was any better the last few years when RW was runnign all over people ?? The bottom line is that a great RB makes a poor OL look good and a good OL look great.

Denver's running game cannot be questioned, except that they use borderline legal/illegal technique in a zone-trapping style of running. The problem with their style of running is that they can't get in done when they have to (running a game out in the 4th, during PO times, etc) and the same can be said for KC, except that they have a pretty decent RB in the Priest....

Your argument that we had more pressing needs to fill may be warranted, except that there just wasn't anyone else at the top end of the draft. An Edwards would have been fine. He fit the bill as a top flite athlete, except that between RB and WR, RB was much more of a need than WR.

There were no franchise QBs to be taken (even if Smith had been available). We have a solid, but not spectacular CBs and depth. Keep in mind that Saban's D will focus less on the man-to-man coverage of the CBs, that made PS expendable. None of the D players were worthy of the #2 spot.

The top 5 athletes were RBs and WRs ?? Who would you have drafted that is to be a better fit for the Fins this year and the years to come ?? Contract negotiations for the #2 player taken are not going to be cheap, but then Mr. H. said that would not be a problem either. If the Fins thought it would be an issue, they would have traded down and gotten less than expected value for that pick to save money. I just don't see why you are complaining...He hasn't held out yet, they haven't even talked about money...the media is planting the dollar figures in the contract based on last years #2 pick. If Saban had traded out of the spot and gotten less value than it was worth, I"ll bet you'd be complaining too ?? Lets let things work out a little before we start condemning Saban. Afterall, he just made our team significantly better offensively with the addition of Brown and Linehan...

By the way ... IMO, taking Edwards with our quarterback situation would have been like pimping out a Ford Escort. :D

first i never ripped anyone for wanting a rb at #2. second, i don't think anyone is going to be laughing about wanting a cb at some point this season. we all wanted to ship out surtain for that 2nd rounder and in a business sense, for good reason, but i hope and pray our d line is vicious and gets serious pressure on opposing qbs, otherwise we might be hurting in pass defense.

Will Poole, can we kick this guy off he has no common football sense.
