Miami Dolphins name Mike McDaniel as Head Coach

Not surprising, it's obvious this guy was the target.

My thoughts:

1. Much better hiring process than we had with Flores. Flores was totally unqualified to be an NFL head coach. Just an awful hire, completely wrong priorities there. I blame Ross and Grier 100%.

2. The Shanahan tree is an improvement over what we've had recently. Those guys understand things like the need for a rushing offense, complementary defense, and putting your quarterbacks in positions where they can succeed, rather than expecting them to run Tom Brady's offense like Tom Brady and thinking that the phrase 'Do Your Job' is meaningful.

3. I'm not impressed with McDaniel himself. Just being honest. Don't like how he presents himself and I think he's going to have to enjoy some kind of immediate success or things could turn disastrous quickly.

4. Which leads me to my last point, the major problems with this franchise are still in place: Steve Ross and Chris Grier.

I think McDaniel has stepped into a situation where he's almost certain to fail, which is a shame, but that was going to be the case for anyone this team could hire. The handful of people with enough strength of personality and competence at the job are either already employed elsewhere or retired.
This is one of the best posts I have ever read on this forum. Well stated. I totally agree on all points. I have a really bad feeling about this upcoming season.

All the **** I got back in February for having my own opinion on McDaniel. This is why everyone is entitled to their own options fellas.

Only reason to keep this guy is if you believe Tua can stay healthy and lead this team next year, if not we are toast.

Wow did this ring prophetic

Not gonna toot my own horn, but this was all very predictable.

FWIW, I would absolutely allow the new GM (in an ideal world where Chris Grier is fired, rehired, and then fired a second time) to make the decision on McDaniel, as I think he has shown a lot of promise.

I think we all would like McDaniel to succeed. Unfortunately, I have never been able to understand how a little, quirky guy was going to be able to lead a team full of alpha males, when adversity hit. I sure hope we fire Grier

Not sure a coach that loses 5 or 6 in a row to miss the playoffs should be safe. Ross must do the right thing and hire a football person to run the team and hire a new GM. Should have done that after last season but Ross went with his usual half measure. Let the new head of football operations and GM decide whether to keep McDaniel or move on.

Dear God. We just gave $20 to a guy to be our HC who has ONE YEAR EXPERIENCE as an OC, has never held a HC position at any level, and was just a "run game specialist", whatever the hell that is, just 2 years ago. I don't even think this guy called plays as the OC last season either. He is basically Kyle Shanahan's friend and protege. Talk about a real shot in the dark. Sigh. This franchise.
Killed us today.

There is a lot to like about his offense. A lot of that credit goes to how good Hill and Waddle are, but there are some clever designs to get guys open.

The biggest problem is the guy cannot manage a game. He isn't a HC. He is an OC at best. He burns timeouts like a crack head burns money. He cannot get plays in on time. It is a huge issue. He rarely is able to counter when opposing coaches make good halftime adjustments. He is lost when it comes to use of challenges. His clock management is atrocious. His team is undisciplined and commits an insane amount of pre-snap penalties.

You can have the best team in the league and all it takes is this guy to get you beat in one playoff game and your season is over. You can go 15-2 and have home field, but if you allow this guy to be your HC in a playoff game he can be the difference and cost you a win with these type of mistakes.

I'm glad the players like him and all, but that doesn't make him HC material. A HC has to be able to manage games in a manner that doesn't handicap your team every week.

Gee. it’s a shame he can’t improve himself over the off-season.

You people are too emotional today. Did you really have to bring up this thread to say the same thing others are saying in a dozen other threads.

Personally I’m excited to see Miami have a top 10 offense for the first time in over a decade and I look forward to Tua and McDaniel fine tuning this complex offense with its many moving parts next season. Frankly I’m tired of coordinators having to “simplify” aka dumb things down for Miami to have an adequate offense.

They said the same thing about jimmy johnson after his 1st year.

It took me ONE pre-season game to see that the play clock is close to 0 on EVERY play. McDaniel seemingly hasn’t noticed in 3 pre-season and 17 regular season games. Or he has noticed and did not change a damn thing. Both options don’t make me feel positive about his “improvement” in the off season.

I just think he has too much on his plate. First of all, he was a rookie head coach. That's hard enough. Secondly, he had a rookie defensive coordinator, so he should have been looking over his shoulder as well. Then, he has never called plays before and was only the offensive coordinator for one year before becoming a head coach. He needs an OC that he trusts calling plays. He can install the offense and do game day planning, but let it go on game day. What happens if he needs to address something on defense or special teams when the offense is on the field? He also needs a seasoned DC. I've been beating the drum for Rex Ryan, but someone like Schwartz or Fangio will do well. Someone that he can say "it's yours" and not have to worry about it. Special teams is a problem. I would try to hire Westoff back as an advisor (he's probably too old to want a full time coaching job) and clean that stuff up, maybe a new ST coordinator too.

Not true at all. I'm a beta personality and was the captain of my college basketball team for 2 years. The idea of only Alpha's leading is moron speak and generally most people don't listen to alphas. Also, I retired as the Senior Enlisted Leader of 104 people at my last comms center in the Navy.
You never saw (cryin') dick vermeil of eagles and rams fame.

Knuckle draggers are not guranteed winning coaches and mcD HAS this locker room.
