New rumor and fins switch to the 4-3

With the Miami Dolphins' recent coaching regime change, many expected the Dolphins to change from the base 3-4 defensive scheme utilized under previous defensive coordinator Mike Nolan to a 4-3 scheme. But, according to new DC Kevin Coyle, that's not where the Dolphins are headed.

"The days of saying we're going to line up and play a 4-3 or a 3-4 are somewhat distant right now in terms of the way the game has evolved," said Coyle told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

"Keeping the quarterback off-balance, through pressure, through coverage, through disguises, will enable your guys to have more opportunity to make plays. There will be elements of both packages."

In fact the Dolphins are leaning toward remaining a 3-4 base defense - if you want to call it that. The Dolphins actually ran a four man defensive front, with Cameron Wake joining the defensive line with his hand in the dirt, more than any other formation last year.

ehhh...i must have had mark anderson confused with andre carter...33 years old...way off...anyways i do know who mark anderson is an all and i could get down with bringing him on as a pass rush specialist i don't see a 3 down player there though...given his age and his production for the pats this year and the cap room they have i'm doubting anderson gets away in new england unless he prices himself out but who knows...now andre carter i think they say good bye to

looks like the mario williams tag is $22 mil...thats a chunk of change no doubt...seems unlikely he does get tagged given that #...makes more sense to me if they have to which i'm not sure of it being the case contract wise for them to use the tag on arian foster which the rb number i'm guessing can't be more than $10 mil and to try and sign williams long term...i just doubt he walks for free

cliff avril sounds to me like he's going nowhere...long term contract or tag...get ready for a lot of these big name guys to drop like flies prior to the opening of free agency...they won't be getting away

I just heard the franchise tag for DEs is $14 million. Why would Mario Williams be $22 million?

i saw a rotoworld i think it was report that said because of something in marios contract if he's tagged its a $22 mil number...if its $14 mil to me that tag for him is still very much in play...but i also heard that the tag should the lions use it on avril is like $10.5 mil so i guess it isn't a flat # in this new cba...

odd stuff

Maybe this can help to explain the difference.

Williams is now a linebacker, meaning he would be categorized among linebackers when it comes to salary calculation. Franchising a player means you are guaranteeing that player at least the average of the top five salaries at his position and the average salary of the top five linebackers is roughly $10 million. Problem: Williams' current cap number is $18 million. Since Williams' cap number is greater than $10 million, franchising Williams means the Texans must guarantee him 120 percent of his current salary next season. It's the way the rule works, either the average of the top five salaries or a 120 percent of the player's salary, whichever is greater. In short, franchising Mario would commit the Texans to paying him over $21 million for the 2012 season alone.

Excellent work digging up that, Geforce. A $22 million franchise tag? No chance. Hell I wouldn't think they'd use even a $14 million franchise tag. I think they're happy with Brooks Reed and Connor Barwin as their OLBs.

Incidentally since this thread is enduro's thread...what's the difference between enduro and this pastor that's making national news because he claims he had a conversation with Jim Haslett at a volleyball game? Seriously. The only difference I can think of is that enduro actually has a history of some predictions based on his supposed ties with Jeff Ireland, that have panned out. The pastor guy has no such history, doesn't even claim to know Haslett, just says they were at a volleyball game and Haslett evidently spilled the beans on all this stuff about the QB position.

1. The pastor revealed his own name and the circumstances under which he talked to Haslett.
2. He said he specifically got the info from Haslett (enduro has only implied he knows Jeff Ireland. He's never come out and said it that I'm aware of).

I don't see how revealing his real name matters. But enduro DID in fact reveal the exact circumstances under which he talked to Ireland and got the information he got. In detail. He hasn't gotten into it lately but when he first came in with his posts, he didn't shy away from it.

2. He said he specifically got the info from Haslett (enduro has only implied he knows Jeff Ireland. He's never come out and said it that I'm aware of).

You're wrong about that. He's backed off on behalf of Ireland but he has said in the past specifically who he got the information from and why he was able to get it.

From a journalist's point of view, I think it matters. Attribution matters. And the difference between an actual person with an actual name (and therefore a reputation) and an anonymous person on a message board seems fairly large to me. Quoting someone anonymously seems to me a situation where the journalist is staking their own reputation ("I can confirm such and such is true and I have sources whose names I can't reveal but you can trust me they're people in the know") to simply reporting what someone else said ("who knows if this is true but it's news so I'm passing it along").

You're wrong about that. He's backed off on behalf of Ireland but he has said in the past specifically who he got the information from and why he was able to get it.

Okay. Good to know. Enduro's posts have a ring of truth to them and like you I think there's something there at least worth paying attention to. One thing people seem to harp on is grading whether every prediction comes true which doesn't seem exactly fair to me given he's probably only given certain options or best case scenarios which may or may not materialize due to circumstances beyond the control of the Dolphins.
