*Official NFL Free Agency thread*

I also think that is a telling coincidence that the two most financially destroyed teams in the NFL are the last two teams desperately waving three years' worth of top draft picks at Houston in a sad attempt to remain relevant.

The Falcons are about to take a 50M dead cap hit on their aging QB when they could have drafted a young QB last year. But they had to take a TE... hoo boy! Sadly, they don't have much on that roster and if they swing this deal, they won't have any draft picks either.

The Saints are an absolute disaster, 29M in dead cap already this year, plus they have restructured 11 of their 12 highest paid players, pushing tens of millions of dollars into 2023 and beyond. They are desperate for young players, and they just are not coming. They've signed exactly ONE FA this year... one. Meanwhile... we're up to about 15 or so?

Yup... Watson might get them into the playoffs, but this isn't a contending team, and their future looks even more bleak. Houston sure is going to enjoy spending all those draft picks.
I love you. Maaaan!!! You tell it like it is. These Jabroni's don't understand.

So after Collins, signs with Cincinnati because he prefers playing with former, college teammates and former coaches, its Grier's fault.

The notion Grier failed, because he's spoken with Collins representatives, is absolutely BS.

Those representatives used, Miami to get more money out of Cincinnati, knowing Cincinnati was just as desperate for their client.

News Flash: Collins doesn't want to play in Miami. Period end of story!!!

This resets every year.

For proof of this, look at how KC failed this year. They spent so much on weapons that they had to allow several linemen to walk away... and that beat them.

Can I promise that a better financial strategy will produce a better result? No... but teams who have taken care of their cap like the Patriots, Packers, and Steelers have managed to remain competitive for decades.
While teams that overspend tend to crash and burn regularly.

The only thing tougher than winning is remaining on top and that's what I aspire to happen for the Dolphins. Blowing our stack on a bunch of mercenary free agents when we are unsure about our QB is ... well... nuts.
Didn't the Chiefs sign Joe Thuney to an $80 million dollar contract last off-season along with like 4 other OL? Their spending on weapons had no impact at all on them replacing whatever linemen they lost the year before. Their OL was not the reason they lost to the Bengals. It was their bizarre conservative play-calling in the second half and their decision to not kick a field goal at the end of the first half that was.

And the 3 other teams you mentioned did not remain competitive because of how they handled the cap, they remained competitive because the 3 teams had Hall of Fame QBs for the last 10-15 years.

Overspending has nothing to do with crashing and burning, choosing to spend on the wrong players does.

Additionally, the Packers are an example of a team bringing in less overall free agents but spending more on each one of them because they bring in more impactful players.

What do you think the odds are that the Chargers don’t make the playoffs? Odds are 2 out of the 4 west teams won’t. Winning free agency doesn’t always mean winning more games. If the Rams stopped adding players after the season started this would have been number 8 for Brady.

The bottom line is that it is going to come down to coaching. It’s that simple. If McDaniel gets these guys playing with a purpose we can beat any team. I believe that. We won 9 last season. With 1 WR and the weirdest, most discombobulated offense I have seen in Miami. And the offense would have won us 2 more if the defense didn’t let us down. Only the Bills and Titans had our number.

If, and it’s a big if, 2 of the 4 teams in the AFC West don’t make the playoffs, it doesn’t mean their FA moves didn’t make them better teams. It just means the AFC West was so good they beat up on each other.

Until every team in the NFL plays the same schedule, regular season record is not going to always be an indicator of what team is better. We won 9 games but we beat several of the worst teams in the NFL and had one of the easiest schedules in the league.

I would say the odds the Chargers don’t make the playoffs is highly unlikely.

Despite our current troubles and shortcomings, I'm glad I'm a fan of this team and not of the Cleveland Browns or Carolina Panthers right now. Cleveland dabbled in the forbidden fruit that was Deshaun Watson, completely embarrassing their organization in the process and potentially losing the best quarterback they've had since Bernie Kosar. And Carolina continues to be lost in the proverbial woods, wandering aimlessly by making myriads of questionable personnel decisions, having an overmatched and underqualified head coach, and completely striking out on their pursuits of multiple high profile quarterbacks, leaving them stuck with Sam Darnold potentially for ANOTHER year as their only option, aside from a young QB they may draft (and ruin). Being uncertain about your team is one thing (Miami) - being hopeless about your team is another (Carolina).

The AFC West is wide open, but I’d say they have a really good shot. They have elite players at key positions. This will be the first season since Herbert’s sophomore year at Oregon that he’ll have the same offense in back to back years. Their HC is going into his second year. They came close to beating the Chiefs twice last year, and that was with the second worst defense in the league. This year they went balls to the wall trying to improve their defense. If their D becomes even just mediocre they’ll be a huge threat.

AFC West games are going to be so much fun to watch this year.

8-1.

Lost no one.

Replaced/replacing bad players.

Young team getting older together.

Not many actual holes to fill.

Upgraded offensive coaching by leaps and bounds.

Signed easy contracts to walk away from.

Future cap space looks abundant.

Has multiple first round picks again next year.

Zach Wilson

Mac Jones

Jaelen Phillips……7 sacks in last 7 games.

Greg Rousseau…….1 sack in final 11 games. 2 of his 4 sacks came week 2 against Miami.

$130 Million vs $24 Million. Josh Allen’s cap hits vs. Tua’s over the remaining 3 years on Tua’s contract.

This is totally nonsensical. Any FA moves are assumed to make a team better. Im not sure of any team signing a player to make them worse. I assume what you are doing is defending some point of how the west is getting all the "good" FAs in your opinion but we can't judge them on it because they all play each other right? That's pretty funny.

That’s not what he said at all lol you can improve as a team from one year to the next and have a worse record. The two aren’t mutually exclusive. There are many factors that go into your overall record, and strength of schedule (which is directly affected by how strong your division is) is certainly one of them.

Are you suggesting the Broncos didn’t get better by adding Russell Wilson, the Raiders didn’t get better by adding Devante Adams, and the Chargers didn’t get better by adding Kalil Mack and JC Jackson?

It’s my opinion that the AFC West is now home to 4 of the 6 or 7 best teams in the AFC. I personally think all 4 teams will still make the playoffs in 2022. But the fact they have to play a total of 6 games each against each other makes for a much tougher divisional schedule than for any other good team in the NFL. Even before their off season moves, all 4 teams in the AFC West had schedules ranked in the top 12 hardest for 2022 based on results in 2021.

I mean I can't say they got better till they get better now can I? On paper you look correct, but they also all lost draft picks, cap space, etc. We'll see at the end of the year. The past decade hasn't really been kind to the AFC west if you recall. The Chargers have been set in an eternity of mediocrity, Denver had a short stint with Manning and the Raiders have perpetually sucked all out.

What I'm saying is a lot of people here seem to be hell bent on getting those splash players in an effort to be a better team, when the fact is this team has much deeper problems than one player would fix. I'm sure you aren't going to sit here and tell me Adams or Wilson and everything it took to get them would fix this team now are you?
