I may be wrong, but last year when we drafted Eich. was there mention that he had played center at some point during his college years? If so could they be thinking in this direction moving forward?

That's been my position as well. I'm not in the "Oh my god, free agency was a failure if we don't get him" camp, but I'd take the risk. As far as the draft goes, I could see Alec Lindstrom being a target due to the BC connection.
I like Lindstrom a lot, as well... If he slides to the third, I'd take the shot. Linderbaum, if he fell to us @29 would also be a consideration. I'd rather go WR or LB @29, but Linderbaum would certainly make me consider it.

Sure, there are going to be options in the draft, but what this team needs now is a quality veteran starter to help quell the chaos that plagued this offensive line all of last year. The offensive line can use an infusion of talent, but I don’t necessarily think it needs an infusion of more youth and inexperience.

Agree there. Centers in particular are tough to evaluate. Penciling in any rookie as a starter at that position is risky. Some make a seamless transition, but most take some time.

(Assuming that we DO sign an OT in FA)

I really don't understand all the negativity that we've seen here. At this point, I see our biggest weaknesses as WR (X type), LB (Mike), and Center (because even if Dieter works out, he's a FA next year). And what makes this even better for us, is that all three of these positions are easily drafted.

Mike LBs fall in the draft every single year. Hell, last year Parsons should have been a top 3 pick and he went 12th. It still KILLS me that we didn't take him. This year there are two guys who are supposedly round one ILBs and at least one of them falls to the #29 position in over half of the mocks that I've seen. Either Lloyd or Dean would be a slam dunk pick for us.

Center: It's Linderbaum or bust in the first, but there are a couple of others who look good. Linderbaum falls to #29 is about a quarter of the mocks that I've seen and we always take him at that point.

WRs: Are deep this year (and every year), and this year there is a WIIIDE discrepancy of opinion about which order they will fall. I've seen numerous mocks where Olave, Burks, or even London fall to us, sometimes several of them fall to us.

FA is only part of the picture on team building, and in my view, it's the least important part.

Imagine we sign Armstead and Collins, then magically free up some cap to sign Odell. Beckham isn’t my first choice, but he’s the best of what’s left. Feel like we would be pretty damn dynamic on both sides of the ball.
I’m not a fan of spending big on Armstead but no doubt those would be the moves of a GM who believed that his QB and defense were ready to win now!!

I'd take the risk on Armstead... yes, I know he is fragile, but with so many young Tackles on our roster, I think we'd be able the weather the storm of a couple of missed games, and I believe it would help our young guys to have a guy like this on the roster.

As a bonus, signing Armstead would mean that we'd be unlikely to draft a lineman (other than a Center).
You’re the one petrified of the salary cap yet you are supporting spending 80-90 million on a tackle that plays 10 games a year? Good god man.

Yep, it's much more cost effective to draft WRs, even if it takes a couple picks to find a good one.
Yeah, assuming we don't make a big FA WR signing between now and the draft, I'm all in on WR at #29.

- It's still a position of need, as much as I like Wilson (and Waddle)
- WR's tend to be an immediate impact position. Maybe we don't want to trade future draft picks, or mortgage the cap future, but with the way the AFC is going we need to be a little in "win now" mode.
- There's no Chase or Waddle type prospect, but there's 6 or7 guys worthy of a mid 1st rd pick. One or two of them should fall to 29. So great value.
- WR's among non QB's are highly paid - rookie contracts are good value
- Weapons around Tua.

Petrified of the salary cap? Heh! Hyperbole does not suit you; either than or you've been unable to understand what several of us have been saying.

I'll try again, I doubt that you'll get it, but I will try.

The salary cap is real, but only over time. You can always bust it for a year or two, but eventually, you have to pay the price. ALL teams move some money into future years via signing bonuses, all of them. The trick is not to completely avoid doing this, but to minimize it. The Saints and the Falcons? They just missed on Watson because they were already blown.

You have to stay light against the cap, so you can go all in on whatever your biggest weakness is. Our biggest weakness, by far, is at OT, so we have to be willing to take a chance there. Armstead is a guy who has missed 38 games in 9 years of being the starter (about 4 games per year), and while this isn't optimal, it is the reason he is available--considering that he is a top 5 Tackle when healthy. Also, he's 31, which unlike a WR or RB, isn't old.

In my previous post, I pointed out that we are long on YOUNG Tackles on our roster and that if Armstead misses his typical 4 games, we would have adequate resources and that the players we have should even be better for watching a consummate professional in action.

Is Armstead a risk? Absolutely, but he is the right kind of risk. You may not think so, but go back and see how many people liked my original post. We may not be right, but this is the consensus opinion.

You thinking 7 or so people on Finheaven represents a consensus opinion is hilarious. Are we all in on this team or are we not? Do we believe in Tua and our defense or do we not? Let’s go for it if we believe, and let’s not if we don’t. It’s as simple as that.
