Signing of undrafted free agents already underway

But you do get caught up in statistics without a view toward context?

Anyhow, the 10 yard split, vertical, broad jump and 20 yard dash are historically important numbers when grading pass rushers. If you look at Cameron Wake's combine, it gives a clue to what he might become.

Height: 6026
Weight: 236
40 Yrd Dash: 4.65
20 Yrd Dash: 2.67
10 Yrd Dash: 1.63
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 20
Vertical Jump: 45 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'10"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.13
3-Cone Drill: 7.12

Does Freeny's excellent athletic numbers mean he's going to turn into Cameron Wake? Of course not. It just gives him a chance.

Well if u had drafted or signed Wake based on those numbers he would not have made your team and been out of football for two years without a call then went to canada and refined his game.
So in actuality wakes combine numbers did not help your team.

Those wonderful combine numbers produced exactly one sack as a senior for Freeney. You cant just pick players based on combine numbers because there is a difference between athletes and football players .

Lol our first draft pick confed lineman, our first ufa cornfed lineman!

How could Miami not have signed an UFA TE right away? That's a big need.

We drafted one and have 3 young ones we picked up last yr. The only TE they would get, in my opinion, would be Z. Miller

Miami can't get top free agents at every position in one offseason. They need to get a QB and RB. TE will be next on the list, but Miller is a top prospect there. Heap is on the market now. Miami missed on Shockey (which I thought was wise). But now they have a chance at Heap. Heap is older, and I know he has had injuries. But he is experienced and that group of TEs are young. Even Fasano is kind of young. Heap would bring leadership and he could step up and make some big catches in big games still.

Cameron Wake has stated many times he was lazy when he came out of Penn State and at 235 pounds the Giants tried him at 4-3 outside linebacker, which is not a position he's suited for. The time he took off allowed him to bulk up to like 250 pounds while still retaining his explosion, allowing him to make the transition to 3-4 outside linebacker.

Here's Von Miller.

Height: 6025
Weight: 246
40 Yrd Dash: 4.42
20 Yrd Dash: 2.57
10 Yrd Dash: 1.57
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 21
Vertical Jump: 37
Broad Jump: 10'06"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.06

3-Cone Drill: 6.70

This stuff does matter. Your explosiveness off the snap can be measured by doing these tests and the highest rated prospects consistently have some of the highest numbers in these drills. It does not by any stretch mean you have what it takes to put it all together. But if Cameron Wake didn't have the lower body explosion to jump like 44 inches, he wouldn't have the lower body explosion to get off the snap like he does. Hide your head in the sand if you want, but those things are related.

Here's Clay Matthews, by the way.

Height: 6031
Weight: 240
40 Yrd Dash: 4.62
20 Yrd Dash: 2.68
10 Yrd Dash: 1.49
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 23
Vertical Jump: 35 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'01"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.18

3-Cone Drill: 6.90

Im not hiding my head in the sand just saying that more often than not good football players perform on the field as well as the combine. I would take a guy with good measurables that performs on the field any day over a guy who looks good running sprints and does nothing on the field. Also when the giants cut him no other team was interested in Wake for over two years so it was much more than being played at OLB in 4-3, NFL teams were not impressed at that time just by his vertical jump.
