Still missing Lamar Miller?

I know you're not a huge fan of Tannehill, but certainly even you can see the difference between him and the worst QB in the NFL (yes, including several backups), at the moment. Miller is 100% of that offense, followed distantly by Blue. And he's being used as a power back, which is a terrible fit, obviously. And yet he's still putting up the 5th best numbers against some top defenses. Yes, he's very good.

Osweiler isn't even close to being as bad as Bortles, and I think Osweiler sucks.

It was too hard to pay Miller what the market demanded. He's a good back, certainly. The fact that he's getting 4.3 yards per carry despite not breaking any long runs this year so far (longest run of 25 yards) is pretty amazing.

I liked Miller but I don't miss him and I wouldn't have paid him the kind of money he got. This team was not good enough to pay a slightly above average running back big money. They have too many holes to be paying running backs top dollar.

he was averaging below 4 ypc going into this last game.

I've seen more from Ajayi in these last two games than what Miller has shown me his whole career in terms of vision, heart, and hunger.

At the same time, the hissy fit that Ajayi threw at the beginning of the year we never saw in Miller's whole career. Not sure what you are talking about in terms of heart. Miller is a good back and is on pace to get about 1,300 yards rushing this year in Houston. I can't say enough about what Ajayi has done the last two games but don't know why we need to discount what Miller is.

We're doing that same thing with Ajayi and Williams. And it's costing us much less to do it. I never thought Miller was that good of a back, rarely broke tackles and\or made people miss in the open field. He was not worth 5.5 mill dollars.

I don't know how a back who rarely broke tackles and/or made people miss in the open field averages 4 1/2 yards per carry over 600+ carries with us. You are describing a player like Daniel Thomas, not Lamar Miller.

btw, Drake should be number 2, not Williams.....just my humble opinion

Ozzy rules!!

I think Drake has put himself in the doghouse for some reason. Can't remember what game it was, but basically there was a game where he was only on the field for special teams and had a stupid, selfish fifteen yard penalty. I do think the coaching staff likes Williams' ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.

Its not really that simple either because one cost a cool million while the other was like 30 million. Also, Miller was dinged up in the game last night.[/QUOT

Miller was affordable for us to resign and is a proven performer. You can never have enough of those types of players on any team. So we spent a 3rd round draft pick instead on a player who has not made any difference so far where if Miller were here that pick could have been used instead on another area of need on this team of which there are many or even better on the best player available regardless of need. If the phins are to be revelant then these types of decisions have to made. Plus again maybe we win those first 2 games with that additional talent on our offense against the Seattle and Pats. So whats it worth to be a 5 2 team instead of 3 4 like we are right now. All of these reasons make Lamars salary, resigning of players like Mathews (we spent another 3rd round pick and more to replace) Shelby and Grimes etc as players who certainly could have made a difference.

Okay, the speculation is kinda getting ridiculous

Miami would have done well to retain Lamar Miller and use that third round pick on another position, but with Ajayi in the picture I don't think Miller would have ever been satisfied giving up carries and eventually splitting the load. Miller wants to be the premier back, where as with Ajayi the difference, now, is that he commands a majority of the carries--we wouldn't dream of taking the ball out of his hands more than we need to. Lamar Miller would get about 30% of the carries now.

That's the night and day difference between Miller and someone who is actually a premier back.

BTW, I like Lamar Miller. He fought to make plays. He just doesn't have the same physical ability as Ajayi. I see people slamming Miller for lack of heart, etc, and I think those people have a very terrible memory. I remember a scrappy running back who would fight to stay upright and who would get every last yard he could. He simply could not bust through defenders or flatten them. Miller has vision, though, and if he could get to open field he would go the distance. By contrast, once he gets going, it takes about 5 yards to bring Ajayi down. Let that settle in your mind...

wait, what?

it takes about 5 yards to bring Ajayi down?

Yeah, I'm really quite impressed by how Ajayi manages so many yards when getting tackled. Literally. You probably looked at this https://theringer.com/miami-dolphins-jay-ajayi-running-back-star-potential-6a6044904674#.yzqzecjjz and many of these plays are not what I consider highlights. I know on occasion he might not get more than 2 yards, but on a lot of his runs he makes one last cut before getting tackled and he falls forward. That alone extends his run by 2-3 yards and often 5 yards. Take the run from about the MIA 2--the tackle begins on the MIA 45 and doesn't stop till the BUF 45.

That's what I mean when I say it takes about 5 yards to bring him down once he gets going [forward].

Many were clamoring to resign Miller and were crying over not signing him in beginning of year too. So a quick comparison on how the guy we kept is fairing vs the guy we let go:

Ajayi

Miller

And lets not forget how much each player is getting paid as well.

If you foresaw Ajayi coming on like this, I'll quit football forever.

Come on, guy... no one and I mean the brightest and best of you including oracles around the world saw this coming. So... yeah... uhhh... signing Miller made sense.

The overstatements on this forum can break necks from the constant head shaking.

For those existing in an absolute black and white macrocosm, please show me the ways of the force because the perplexing grays of r e a l i t y whoops my ass on a daily basis.

Gotchya. It just sat funny in your previous post when you said "by contrast" and the previous sentence referred to Miller's breakaway speed.
