The 2006 Boston Red Sox Thread

My god... Another money debate with another Yankee fan repeating the lie to himself that money doesn't matter...

It's almost like a Bush supporter insisting there was a link between Iraq and al qaeda, still...

lol I think it is funny that everytime you mention payroll, the thread just turns into a Yankee fan b1tch session.

There is no way to avoid salary discussion. It comes with having the highest payroll in all of pro sports. they want all of the credit but none of the criticism? It doesn't work that way.
:boohoo: Get over it. Who's b1tching again?

Don't you guys get tired of whining about that?

glad to hear, i sorta hoped that's what it was, but u never know with athletes now a days

True but Ortiz has been a class act since coming here. He donates a lot to sick kids, always visiting them in hospitals, invites them into the clubhouse before games, donates money to the DR. The guy is up for the Roberto Clemente award for all his work.

But you're right you never know what athletes now a days and its a shame.

For any Sox fans out there, our minor league teams are doing pretty well in the playoffs (too bad the big club can't say the same thing). George Kottaras, the catcher who they got for Wells, is 5 for 18 with 2 homers since he joined the team.

Anyway here's the top prospects, aka the "future" of the Sox if Theo is right:

I think Jacoby Ellsbury will be up to Boston at the end of next year and possibly Edgar Martinez. Clay Buchholz is the best Sox pitcher in the system, followed by Michael Bowden, who were both very very good in Single A this year.

Just thought I'd share because what else is there to talk about?

Nice to see the Sox not lay down to the Yanks this weekend, unlike the last time. Ortiz is 1 HR away from tying Jimmy Foxx's HR record.

Also good to see Dustin Pedroia and David Murphy doing well at YS. It's never an easy place to play in no matter if you're a rookie or 10 year-vet. Eventhough the games are meaningless good to see them get their feet wet and play good ball. Pedroia reminds me of Mark Loretta only younger, faster and better defense.

They did show some figth and some pride, they could have been watching the yanks celebrate but they prevented that. Losing sucks but when my teams aren't in it I still like to see them show pride and fight until the end so at least you guys have that going for you plus maybe it sets a tone for the offseason and heading into 2007.

I agree. I liked seeing the team playing with a little heart and pride this weekend. I'm sure they were motivated by the fact that they didn't want to see the Yankees celebrating with them watching.

With that being said I wish Francona would put Hansen in the closer's role now to see if he can handle it, or how he handles it. It would make the Papelbon 2007 situation easier, although all signs point to him starting.

Kevin Towers hammered Mirabelli in the SD papers:

I personally don't think it's right to knock the guy 4 months after robbing the Red Sox in the worst trade of 2006 (so far). But I guess Mirabelli must have really pissed him off. I actually heard from insiders with the Sox that Mirabelli is the less liked guy in the clubhouse and in general.

I hated this deal at the time and still hate it. Good move by the Sox FO dumping Bard (a 25 year old) after 5 games and Meredith (21) for an old back up catcher. Not to say that Bard or Meredith would be this good in Boston but I'd take a chance instead of Mirabelli, who by the way I wanted gone since September 2005.

Craig Hansen, your my hero!

The kid just isn't ready to pitch in the big leagues. The scary thing is is that the Sox are talking about having Matt Clement be the closer next year because they don't think Hansen will be ready for the role.

We are right back were we started without Papelbon coming out of the pen.. Add this to the fact that Mike Timlin is DONE, and we now need a set-up guy and closer.. Clement at closer.. Are they trying to kill Sox fans early..

Typcial Red Sox huh? Finally beating the best (left handed) pitcher in baseball when it doesn't mean anything.

The Clement as closer doesn't make sense for 2 reasons: he never throws strikes and can't handle pressure. Other than that I think he has the stuff to be a closer because teams really don't start pounding on him until the 2nd time up.

Timlin has actually pitched better but I still wouldn't resign the guy. Let him walk.

Also congrats to David Ortiz for breaking Foxx's single season HR record of 50, by hitting #51 off of Johan Santana in the first. Also a GREAT shot of Ortiz hugging Pesky afterward.

Also Ortiz is going to sell his #50 HR ball and give the money to the Boys and Girls Club of America and a hospital in his Naive Dominician Republic. Typical Ortiz, always giving to kids.
