The OFFICIAL draft Cam Newton Thread!!!

In fairness, Fairley doesn't play offense against the nations toughest D in that game.

Honestly, if you can't agree that Fairley dominating that line in the second half was paramount to Auburn coming back in that game, then we didn't watch the same game. It's not a knock on Cam, it's the truth. Fairley was the reason Cam was able to get the ball back into his hands so many times.

What's fun about all this is some of us will be right and some of us will be wrong. Speculation is awesome.

This is not a comparison by any means but Brady made himself a NFL QB. Russell made himself a bust. Newton could be either. If he has the work ethic he could be awesome, if he doesn't he will fall on his face. As I believe CK says, this is counterpounch league, he may get some people year 1 but he better be ready to work in year 2 or he will be done like so many others.

Not what I said. Fairley totally destroyed their Oline in the 2nd half but you still have to score points against Satan and his Henchmen on that defense. That is not easy.

First of all, Cam Newton is not Michael Vick... nor are you going to win anything in this league with a Michael Vick. That's not the type of quarterback I'm seeking.

You were there because you're a huge Bama fan and so your opinion on this one is not exactly a shocker.

Hahaha.

But seriously, I would draft Devlin/Yates/ in the later rounds before taking Newton in the 1st.

Three point Bob, for a guy you don't want at 15, you said "impressive throw" or "great throw" some six times. With enemies like that, Cam doesn't need any friends, haha.

I mean, when we scrutinize a kid to death, we can always find flaws with anyone.

If Cam interviews well and convinces Ireland he wants to put the film work in, who says he can't rectify the one read issue? 15 is around where we took Jason Allen. The risk here is far outweighed by the upside, IF he interviews well.

It's made a lot easier when Satan's defense is getting flagged half a dozen times for substition infraction penalties because they can't sub fast enough to keep up with Malzahn's 80 play a game offense... and when the QB of the defense is out of the game because of torn pec muscle and a walk-on who doesn't know what's going on takes his place.

Alabama let Auburn back in the game because of penalties, fumbles that ended TD drives, dropped passes in the endzone that ended TD drives, and the fact that two guys couldn't block Nick Fairley in the 2nd half... which is why they couldn't run the ball and protect that lead.

Slimm, I hear you on the Akili comparison. They both had the one year. But Akili didn't grow from there.

Just because you only played one year doesn't necessarily mean you cannot grow and develop from there. Smith didn't. But why does that mean Newton won't? If anything, if the one read knock on Cam is true, why doesn't that actually show upside in the sense that there is plenty of room for him to expand his game? Akili didn't but maybe Cam will.

How can you say that? The league is ever changing animal. Vick has a nice year this year. WHo's to say he does bottle it up again and put up great numbers next year and gets some help from his D? If you can always have the threat of a run but teach Vick or Newton to pass first are they not the same as many other great QBs who have won in the NFL. Again Vick was a very unpolished passer, but this year with some guidance and some maturity he turn into a pretty good pocket passer and ran the offense very well. He ran into a beast called the GB Packers. Are Vick and Newton the same type of qb like Young, Elway and Rodgers though even more dangerous with their legs IF big IF the can teach themsleves to pass first, second and third, and then only run? Again big IF and probably a big stretch to assume that either will do it.

Jamarcus Russell has extraordinary and ridiculous throws in college...

I still would never had wanted him in the 1st round.

I much rather trade down and get a 2nd round pick and late round 1st even if Newton was there at 15.

Agreed. No argument. But losing one player should not make you lose a game. Look at the Packers last night. Woodson down, Driver down and still win. I know that's NFL compared to College but you know what I'm getting at. Bama's d has star power all over the place not just one guy.

Where exactly did I ever insinuate that ANY prospect can't develope?

Any team that takes Cam Newton and expects him to come in and be a franchise quarterback is going to be cleaning out their front office in 3 years.

I'd take a shot on Cam Newton around pick #50... that's how I've always felt about it and it won't change.

I don't think Newton had any reason to stay in school. He won a National Championship and he is going to be drafted very highly. Rising above Blaine Gabbert would absolutely not surprise me and it's the reason I've been criticizing Gabbert for his recent decision not to throw at the Combine. He seems to think his position as #1 QB is secure, but it's not, and he needs to do EVERYTHING he can to secure it. I would not be surprised to see Newton rise above him, nor would I be surprised to see Cam Newton going #1 overall. He's a better prospect than Mike Vick was, he's a better prospect than Vince Young was. He has a skill set that probably has never been seen before. Daunte Culpepper was not as quick as him when it comes to making moves behind the line of scrimmage to get free or pressure. Nor was Akili Smith nearly as athletically compelling.

The biggest criticisms of him are mere satellites to an analysis of his skill as a quarterback. And honestly those particular avenues of critique (finding guys that fit the classic profile, four year starters, pro style systems, guys with perfect off field records, etc) have a dubious record in recent years when it comes to figuring out who is going to make it in the NFL and who is not. The NFL is changing. There's no use denying it.

Spread QBs are succeeding, because Spread concepts are all around the NFL. To deny that would be taking a blind eye. Bad character and low work ethic people are winning games, as well as competing in and winning Super Bowls and Conference Championships. Quarterbacks are protected more than ever, wide receivers are protected more than ever, and defensive backs are restricted in their physical coverage more than ever. The shotgun is more popular than ever. The teams that are winning the Super Bowl are passing the ball more than ever. The Saints won the Super Bowl last year passing the ball 41 times compared with 16 runs. The Packers just won the Super Bowl passing the ball 42 times compared with 11 runs from James Starks. More QBs finished the season with 90+ passer ratings than ever before in the history of the NFL. More of the screens that people are so casually tossing out the window as "not counting" are being thrown by NFL teams, than ever before. More of the first or second reads that some people also toss out the window so casually are being thrown than ever before. People around the New England program have said that Tom Brady knows where the football is going before the snap on about 80% of passes.

Keep holding onto Jurassic profiles and requirements of the QB position if you like...I still believe many of those things are important. Cam Newton is the first real option/running quarterback that I've ever liked for the 1st round, and he's also the first one year starter that I've ever liked for the 1st round. I'm not displaying any kind of pattern of bias. I'm just recognizing trends and recognizing talent, doing my usual investigation and coming to an opinion.
