Washington releasing Alex Smith

Of course they were going to release him, he was scheduled to make almost 19 million dollars next season. I definitely like Smith as a backup but it really depends on what his rates going to be, and I'm guessing somebody's going to pay him in between the 7 to 10 million range and I think that'll be too pricey for us.
Thats normal these days

No that's on the high end for backups, Mariota and taysom Hill were the only ones to make that type of money as backups. There were numerous backups that made 1.5 to 4 million last year.

Flores screwed up with the whole relief pitcher thing.

Tua can't look like the 2nd best QB in camp.
So this is where I am at too. The last thing Tua needs is a backup who is pretty good like Fitzpatrick because we dont need the media, the fans or God forbid teammates talking about who might be better to start at any point during the season. I think Alex Smith would be ideal as he isn't able to play at the level he once could but he is a tremendous mentor. Patrick Mahomes still talks about him to this day and the profound impact he had on his development. Look, I know some will say you have to have a capable backup in case of injury, etc but honestly with all due respect to Morrall and Brady the vast majority of the time if the starting QB goes down you aren't winning the super bowl. All you need is a guy who is serviceable and can get you through a short period of a game or two and while Smith cant light the scoreboard up he is a guy who makes very few mistakes and will keep you in games.
Im not saying it needs to be Smith, I just think he fits the mold of what Tua needs behind him.

At 33, Andy Dalton is the best back up QB available... and he's the one I want.

If we can't get it done, then I might consider Smith or one of the others. If we end up with a 35 year old, never was Brian Hoyer... I will cry very real tears.
I wouldn't lie to you if I thought you were wrong as much of a fan I am of you fever, but I have to agree on this one too. Dalton's career to me isn't over at all. I don't know if he wants to be a back up in this league yet however. If Wentz, Goff, and etc are still projected to start then IMO so should he. If Tua goes down he will be a great option for us.

No. If we’re going to go with Tua then we need to draft our new backup QB. Don’t go the veteran route bc were asking for problems if we go that way again this year. If Tua starts to struggle which he undoubtedly will during some stretch of the season (this happens to most QBs through the course of a 16 game season) and Flo brings in a Alex Smith or Andy Dalton or some vet and he plays well and we win then we’ll have guys in the locker room questioning Tua again. We don’t need the relief pitcher style deployed at all this year. We need to see and know what Tua can do and if he can bring us from behind in the 4th quarter when we’re trailing. Before the pumpers jump on this post and say “Arizona” I’m not talking about last year I’m talking about this year and for a full 16 games. We need to see Tua for a full 16 if that’s the route we’re going so we can make a decision after this year on whether he’s the guy. I don’t want any more excuses. He’s either the guy or he’s not after this year.

We need to draft a rookie in the 3/4 round. Somebody like Kyle Trask/Davis Mills/Kellen Mond. Honestly I really don’t care although all 3 of those guys are interesting in their own ways. Just draft a rookie and let him be the backup and if a 3/4 round rookie happens to come in and outplay Tua then we know he ain’t the guy anyway and then we’ve got another young guy who’s at least showed potential and would have some value. Draft a QB every year until we get it right. Who knows maybe we’d get lucky and get a Kirk Cousins/Dak Prescott type. Bottom line don’t put ANY unnecessary pressure on Tua. I want him to KNOW he’s the guy from the opening snap until the final whistle. I’m as hopeful/curious as everybody else but I just think we should go the rookie backup route rather than the vet backup route. Plus this saves probably 5-7 million on the cap.

I want a young (prefer rookie) to provide legit competition -- definitely want a better athlete -- bigger -- capable of threatening the edge. OK with a developmental kid but way better with a prime choice talent. Position is way to important to neglect otherwise.

I agree Smith should retire and just be thankful he didn't lose part of that leg.

So funny as many here think Tua will be a great QB yet we’re scared of someone making him look second best in camp. SMH if that’s the case then Tua isn’t the long term answer.

Would we want him as a back upand mentor?
Well considering the only person who checks down more than Alex Smith is Tua ... no. We need Tua to learn to dare to do more than 1 TD a game.
