Without Tannehill, We'd be the Browns (In-depth research)

What if Ryan can't ever function at that level unless the pocket is always clean? Most teams don't have a clean pocket every play. The QB has to improvise on just about every NFL team. So putting up those stats is great but what team actually has that perfect case scenario of a clean pocket all the time so Ryan can thrive?
You're right, you can't expect a pocket to be clean - but through drafting and free agency you can make it cleaner. And that's why RT's 2016 top 3 accuracy on deep passes is relevant considering he operated mostly out of a dirty pocket. Imagine how many more passes he could have connected on with better protection!

My concern is that his mobility suffers in buying time. That, and how vulnerable his knee may be to further injury are the reasons I'd love to see us trade up to get Mayfield and then let the chips fall where they may. Otherwise, I would be a strong "fix the OL as a top priority" advocate with no qualifications.

All I ask is people try to back up what they think with some facts, instead of general rants. Nobody knows who is right or wrong, but make a logical case

Well I hate to tell you this but you aren’t ever gonna get that when it comes to that qb when it comes to anyone who knows how to analyze that tape.

I guarantee you that much.

I don't want to agree with this, because I've made a New Year's resolution to be excellent to my fellow posting brothers, even when they are not being excellent themselves. But I can't really disagree with it.

One thing I will say about Aqua posting some of those cuts from 2012 is that it really reinforces that 2012 Ryan Tannehill came into the NFL with a reasonably good feel for the pocket and some nice moves to escape pressure. 2016 Tannehill rediscovered a lot of that ability. It's a coachable trait.

Ultimately I think this is one of the more interesting Tannehill threads, just because it highlights the big dividing line between what I see as the two big camps in Dolphins fandom on the subject of Tannehill. Those who think that we surrounded him with crap and he elevated the crap to a functional level, and those who think that we surrounded him with good talent and he was a lead weight under it.

One thing that I think all of us should agree on is that Joe Philbin did the Miami Dolphins a big disservice by putting Rishard Matthews in his doghouse as a rookie (Armon Binns? Anthony Armstrong? Legedu Naanee? Come on!) and only letting him out when his contract was just about to expire. Matthews is a good receiver, and the few times that he got on the field, he was extremely productive on a per-target basis, while also managing to get himself open for a high volume of targets.

I don't want to take this any further cause I want to see what he has to say on a yearly basis and I'm definitely gonna be asking for his take on some things and what was driving the results

one things for sure he's going to be putting in a lot of time and effort

A reply to....without tannehill wed be the browns.....

Well, we were without tannehill the entire year and we won 6 games.....The browns won 0 games...I say we still better than the browns without tannehill.....He will help us abit more but he isnt our savior.

Our saviour Qb will be drafted in the first round this year in april. If not then they will regret it forever.

We dont even know if tannehill can play in 2018. Gaze wants his own groomed qb.

Adam GaSe (with an S) took the job because he had a franchise QB. He said as much.

I think Adam Gase probably took the job because Miami offered him a lot of money, control over his staff, and yeah, the quarterback situation is a win-win for him. He inherited one of the most talented veteran quarterbacks in the NFL and if he wins with him, he gets credit for 'fixing' the quarterback. If he doesn't win with him, he can blame the QB and draft a new quarterback.

with tannehill as starting qb, we have had 2 seasons in his 5 seasons as our starting qb with a worse record or the same as we had without him this year. 2012- 6-10, 2015, 5-11.

in the other 2 seasons, 2013 and 2014, we went a mediocre 8-8, 1 which was an extremely disappointing 8-8 as we lost our final 2 games in 2013, and 2014 we finished on a high note at 8-8.

in 2016 we were 8-5 when tannehill went down, and no one knows how that seasons would have finished with him.

so basically with tannehill we are avg to below avg based and without him pretty much the same.

u want to see a team that looks similar to the browns without there starting qb, look at the packers this season. start 4-1 with rodgers, he goes down, go 3-8 rest of way. that is a team missed there qb in a big way this year. the fins are mediocre at best with tannehill as they have showed us during his time with us .

Lol. Extensive work. Dolphins record is X, therefore the QB is Y.

Really in depth.

I know he gives a lot of lip service during his PCs, but he said as much multiple times.

I try not to read anything into positive statements Gase makes about players, for the simple fact that Gase goes to extraordinary lengths to shield his players most of the time. On the few occasions that Gase has publicly called out a player or really been in any way negative about them, I think it indicated an extreme level of dissatisfaction.

Specifically, I'm thinking of the post-Baltimore callout (of Ajayi and presumably Landry) and the post-Buffalo callout of Jay Cutler. In the former case, we know that Gase was at his wit's end and that a player was essentially being insubordinate. In the latter case, Cutler was so bad that he singlehandedly eliminated the Dolphins from playoff contention in a very winnable football game.

In the former case, we saw Ajayi traded a few days later, and there were rumors that Landry went on the block too. In the latter case, Miami made it clear that they had no interest in bringing Cutler back to compete for the starting job pretty much immediately afterward. Gase was only willing to publicly express dissatisfaction with a player when he'd reached the breaking point with them.

Op does tannehill tape study? Where can I go to see this analysis

IN 2016, I launched a website where I graded every QB and every throw (sans QBs that didn't start a qualifying amount of games). I did write-ups, and had my own ranking system on them.

That website is here: http://www.thirdand10.com/

I made it 6 weeks into 2017 but had to put a stop to the project because I started working more hours and just didn't have time.

I've written other pieces with GIFs and scouting reports:

This is the one everybody seemed to love:

http://www.thirdand10.com/tannehill-era/

Another one about the difference between Cutler and Tannehill

https://www.lockedondolphins.com/tannehill-savior/

Here's one I did comparing QBs pre and post 30th birthday

https://www.lockedondolphins.com/qbs-better-with-age/

For bonus, here's a piece I did mid-season about why Miami should go from Cutler to Moore.

Yeah, you can admit "I stopped doing it in 2017 because I didn't have the heart to watch All-22 of Jay Cutler air mailing Kenny Stills when he was ten yards open."

And that will turn into an in-depth column. It'll be a five parter, one for each year. Expect it to roll out before free agency.
