Fields had the lousy throwing motion at Ohio State, with a hitch in his backswing. I thought too many were ignoring that. Finally Dan Orlovsky did a nice breakdown a few weeks before that draft.
I thought he should have gone lower first round, near the area where Jordan Love went. Instead the Bears forced him too high.
Now he's improved the delivery somewhat but it's still far from ideal. More than anything he can't adjust pace and loft to fit every degree on the rainbow. Everything is a line drive or semi line drive. It's the Trevor Lawrence tendency and countless others. Those guys can make certain plays, especially in college, but NFL windows require special ability to make every throw. It's also the reason Lamar Jackson sometimes gets in trouble. The more side armed you are the more difficult it is to vary the loop.
College quarterbacks who are line drive prone are continually overrated, IMO. Everybody envisions those 3rd and 10 darts instead of all the problems when those lanes are taken away.
I thought Fields might have been interesting to compete against Tua, if available late and after that rookie season in which Tua looked physically overmatched by the league. That was before McDaniel, who has camouflaged Tua somewhat and, as others have emphasized, runs an offense that doesn't suit Fields at all.
