Tom Hicks believes Mike Modano will become a Dallas Star for life Wednesday morning.

Modano is about 90 percent sure.

Hicks and Modano spent much of yesterday discussing a new five-year, $17.75 million deal to keep Modano in Dallas, and Hicks, who is spending time in California, said when he hung up the phone that he believed Modano was as good as signed.

"The last thing I said was, 'Do we have a deal?' and he said, 'Yes.' So I said, 'Congratulations on finishing your career with us,' and we left it that," Hicks said. "Is it legally binding? No. Could Mike change his mind? Sure, that's his prerogative. But, in my mind, we have a deal."

this just in!!!

Pronger to oilers for Lynch, Woywitka and Brewer

guess neids not going there!

neidermayers agent is coming on candian talk radio...ill lt ya know what he says

Here's what Niedermayer's agent had to say:

- Canucks will have to find different avenues to sign Scott with Naslund resigning to make it work

- Has talked to 14-15 teams in last 2 days.

- Was in discussions with Edmonton till 9:30 pm

- Calgary isn't completely out of the picture

- Feels Niedermayer is $7 million+ player

- Have talked to Anaheim

- Couple teams on the west coast are still calling at this hour.

- There's a chance Niedermayer would play for less for Vancouver

HUGE for Edmonton- that's the biggest name they've had up there since Messier. Great move for both teams- the Oilers get a franchise d-man and St. Louis picks up 1 already VERY solid first-pairing guy in Brewer and two guys with tremendous upsdie in Woywitka and Lynch.

more on neidermayer

"WFAN in NYC (Devil's Flagship) is announcing the Devils have a press conference set for tomorrow to announce a major signing and he just said somebody in one of the hockey chat rooms is saying a radio station in Philly is also saying Niedermayer is staying in New Jersey, and signed a 5 year, 32 million dollar contract."

OTTAWA SUN: Tim Baines reports Senators GM John Muckler has so far struck out in his quest to bring in some free agent grit to his roster. Darren McCarty and Bobby Holik, two players the Sens were believed to be interested, signed elsewhere yesterday. It's believed the Sens may be planning to sign former Bruin Martin Lapointe.

TORONTO SUN: Lance Hornby reports the Maple Leafs are on the verge of losing another key free agent, that being Tie Domi, who claims he's disillusioned after not getting a two year deal from the club.

RDS.CA: reports Montreal Canadiens starting netminder Jose Theodore is seeking a long-term contract, believed in the neighbourhood of four year, $22 million.

NEWYORKISLANDERS.COM: reports Isles GM Mike Milbury still isn't done making additions to his club following yesterday's signing of defenceman Alexei Zhitnik. He claims he intends to announce another signing of a mobile young defenceman to compliment Zhitnik, and plans to seek out one or two more forwards for offensive depth.

TAMPA TRIBUNE: Erik Erlendsson reports Nikolai Khabibulin is no closer to re-signing with the Lightning, although they remain very much in the mix for his services. The Blackhawks, Coyotes and Red Wings are also believed interested in him

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika reports Stars captain Mike Modano is about 90 percent certain he'll re-sign with the club to what's believed to be a five-year, $17.5 million contract. The Bruins are still believed very interested and could make one more pitch to Modano today.

BOSTON GLOBE: Nancy Marrapese-Burrell reports the Bruins are doggedly pursuing Modano, who continues to weigh his options with them and the stars, as well as defenceman Brian Leetch.

MLIVE.COM: Ansar Khan reports Detroit Red Wings spokesmen are denying a rumour of the Wings planning to ship restricted free agent forward Pavel Datsyuk to Boston in exchange for Joe Thornton. The Wings remain far apart with Datsyuk in contract talks, as he's believed seeking $5 million per season, a considerable raise from the $1.5 million he made in 2003-04.

THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS REPORTS THE STARS HAVE SIGNED DEFENCEMAN MARTIN SKOULA TO A TWO-YEAR DEAL. FINANCIAL TERMS WEREN'T DISCLOSED.

Can anyone supply a list of remaining free agents...I'm having a hard time finding one.
