If we come out of the 1st round with no WR then it'd suck. That's our biggest weakness right now so waiting till later to draft one is playing with fire.
Fair enough... To point A.. I keep seeing everyone say well we saw them at Alabama and they were great yes you’re right. At Alabama he had the best OL in the country along with 4 first round WRs spreading the field to go with a 1st/2nd round tailback in Najee Harris amongst the other tons of 5 star guys Bama has. Mac Jones is doing the same thing at the same level Tua was and nobody considered him the Talent they do Tua. Life is good at Alabama for QBs.We’re going to have to agree to disagree here.
A) We’ve already seen Tua with Smith and Waddle. Looked pretty damn good to me.
B) The arm strength stuff has gone completely overboard. Tua has a slightly below avg arm by almost all velocity metrics - actually better than burrows which I’m sure will surprise a lot of people. Why are we acting like this is Chad Pennington at the tail end of his career?
C) You know what fast, twitchy WR’s do with the short pass game that you’re referring to? They threaten to score with it. You know what Bateman, DVP etc do? Next to nothing.
Last point, even if you add 2 WRs of the skill set I’m describing, this isn’t a WR unit filled with midgets. We would still theoretically have DVP, Preston, and Gesicki should essentially be treated as a WR as that’s how he’ll be used in those situations.
We have zero WRs on the roster that threaten defenses vs man coverage. All guys that rely on their 50/50 skills.
Want to know why we struggle so much with Buffalo? Because you can’t man up the bills with Diggs, Beasley, and Brown. They dictate the defense with their personnel. Want to man us up? Good luck. We’ll prepare for zone looks, and just beat you in man. We don’t have any of those guys, and I don’t see Bateman solving that issue
We disagree on too many philosophical levels to keep this going lol. Have a good nightFair enough... To point A.. The arm strength stuff is definitely concerning. I’m sure analytics do say his arm is just below average bc that’s exactly what it is below average. He’s never going to throw and hit bomb after bomb and become a quick strike QB in the mold of Mahomes or Allen. It doesn’t matter how fast your WRs are if your QB can’t throw it more than 50 yards down the field. It takes everything Tua has to hit that distance.
You’re right about quick/twitchy guys they can yac you to death. But you know what else those small guys do? They get hit often and they get injured and then miss games. It doesn’t matter how fast you are if you ain’t on the field. Yes DVP stays hurt but those are dings like hamstrings not because his body can’t hold up against the hits. If Tua is what we all hope he is why are we so dead set on needing WRs who yac people to death? Aren’t we confident enough in Tua that he can put the team on his back and get it in the end zone? That’s what franchise QBs do they will their teams to victory.
Want to know why Diggs Beasley and Brown tear us and everybody up? Bc they have Josh Allen who has a cannon and can fire it to every spot on the field. They have elevated Josh Allen no doubt but the reverse is also true. He is elevated them bc he’s become confident and relaxed and plays with a swagger like he’s sure of himself bc he is. Yes Tua is a rookie but at some point he really needed to show flashes of greatness which besides the 2nd half of Arizona he never did. If he anything he regressed instead of progressed. The reason is bc once more an more tape started coming out DCs knew what he couldn’t do and started to take away the things he could.
I prefer JaMarr Chase and he’s only 6’0/6’1 so it’s not like I’m advocating for 6’4/6’5 WRs. I just think he and Bateman fit Tuas skill set and our offense in general than do Smith Waddle or Moore. Those guys are nice to have and the speed can/will stretch the field. But you can’t take full advantage at those guys elite traits without proper arm strength and Tua unless his arm gets stronger in the offseason which it could doesn’t possess the required strength to take full advantage of those guys skill sets
I agree with most of this, but Smith really isn’t some speed guy (although he does look faster on tape than he actually is). He has comparable athleticism to Parker coming out of college, but he is shorter and 40lbs lighter. In terms of route running and body control Smith is much more polished than Parker was. Not to say he won’t have success, but he won’t burn NFL defenders as routinely as he did in college. We’re going to have to agree to disagree here.

Great point! A lot of us forget that.It all depends what we do in March. Might be a few interesting FAs added before draft.

And Smith won the Heisman.Sewell is literally that once a generation talent at Tackle. He won the Outland Trophy last year as a Soph and would've been the first Tackle in last year's draft. He and AJ can play either Tackle spot. You can't pass on him. We can still get a quality WR at 18. I've got a feeling tho, that the Jets stick with Darnold and take Sewell at 2. If that happens then we trade back.
People saying Smith isn’t a speed guy are going to be surprised at the combine. He’s very fast. No one burns NFL corners like they did in College but comparing his athleticism to Parker is way off base in my view. I like Parker’s skill set but Smith is so much more elusive and explosive. I actually see no comparison.I agree with most of this, but Smith really isn’t some speed guy (although he does look faster on tape than he actually is). I like this as well. I'm leaning towards trade down from 1a and Sewell and picking up RT in FA or if the cards align grab Leatherwood later somehow. Lotta time left to go through all the scenarios as well, but I like where your head's at.I'm sure this will be discussed throughout this off-season and player stocks will go up and down..
But my ideal scenario RIGHT NOW would be
Sewell at 3. Then depending on how draft plays out, trade up using 18 and 2B to 9-10-11 range and draft whoever is left from Chase/Smith/Waddle. Use 2A on either Harris or Etienne if they are still available
I look at Parker as a dead ball specialist, throw that ball up doesn't matter how much seperation he has (Usually very little to begin with), while Devonta Smith might be one of the best route runners of recent years coming out of college.People saying Smith isn’t a speed guy are going to be surprised at the combine.
