Myth: Drafting a Nickel Corner is a Luxury

You can find a legit nickel corner in Round 5.

They can find a legit QB, OL, DL, etc. in round 5 too. But that doesn’t stop franchises from trying in the first few rounds either, does it?

You try way too hard to be a naysayer about anything and everything. And you typically use really poor, easily defeated logic in doing so. Time to find something you’re better at.

You can find a legit "any position" in round 5, but the likelihood of that happening is very slim. Noah I. is going to play 80% of the snaps, that is worth a 1st round value. Kid was a hell of a player for Auburn, good coverage skills, nice hips, and is a strong tackler. All things you want for the position.

Beat me to it. 100% correct.

It appears the majority here recognizes the importance of the position.

This isn’t like when we drafted Jamar Fletcher. The game has changed. I don’t know why we even call it a 3rd CB anymore, when it’s basically a starting base role. This was an excellent pick.

We didn't think twice when the cowboys added Ceedee to a WR core that already had Cooper and Gallup. That's because in the new NFL, the base set is now 3 WR's.

And not only are there more receivers, but TE's and RB's that are better receivers than ever.

Obviously defenses have adjusted. We've gotten used to the term "front 7," but it's much more often a "front 6." I can only find numbers from 2018, but base defense was only run 25% of the time. Nickel was run 60% and Dime was run 13%.

The idea that you only play 2 CB's is as antiquated as the idea you only play two WR's.

Add in that only 10 corners played over 80% of their snaps, and you can see that your third corner has no ceiling to how many snaps they play. If they can also play outside, your slot corner is a full time starter. And it's actually best if you have 4 capable corners.

I'm fine debating whether Noah was the right pick based on his talent. But I'm just tired of hearing the pick trashed "because we already have Howard and Jones."

My answer to that is, which one of those guys is covering Ceedee in the slot?
As someone who got trashed for saying we needed to draft a DB or two before the draft, I'm with you ;)

I agree 100%. A team needs at least 4 good CBs and 3 good safeties or 7 good CBs used all over the field.

The Pats and Flores used multiple CBs. That is what the Fins are going to be doing too. Should Noah have been picked at 30? Don't know all the NFL teams' draft boards. Only time will tell.

Yes. When we took Fletcher we had Madison and Surtain and you didn’t need a 3rd corner. Plus the guy sucked.

You can find a legit nickel corner in Round 5.

Or you can find one that the coach feels is the best fit, most coachable, has the highest upside, and one that the coach felt wouldn't be around in the 5th round.

Or you could do the same thing you have been doing for 45+ years and not winning a SB.

I think I am going to defer to Flores, Grier, McKenzie, Allen and Co.

Kids an awesome athlete and can neutralize the opposing pass game and
take the pig the other direction for 6... Comes from wOrld class stock
humble hard worker "effing stud" per Flo --- until proven otherwise
he was a great pick!

BTW -- the core premise of being a "fan" is
optimism + positivity + belief...

Otherwise, you're just a BUMMER!

Afe East with those young QBs are going to have a hard time throwing on Miami. Wouldn’t be surprised if Miami leads the league in ints again, hell they tied for the league two years ago less talent.
