Clump,
Is it the top pay from the previous year ? For instance, if franchise tagged in 2004, the salary is based upon 5 top salaries in 2003 ?
If this is the case, I think some of the new contracts will put a whoopin' on that 5.734 million.
Let's see here....Here are the top five salaries for offensive linemen not including the bonuses...
Allen, Larry 4000000.00
Ogden, Jonathan 3680000.00
Verba, Ross 3600000.00
Runyan, Jon 3500000.00
Lepsis, Matt 3400000.00
Larry Allen got a 12 million signing bonus and if Pace gets anything near the 25 million bonus his agent is asking for that's going to catapult that tag to astronomical levels...I don't know how those bonuses are prorated but I'd be interested to know..
Anyway, I guess my point is that due to the contracts signed this year I think the franchise tag next year is going cost way too much for the average club to use it on the average player...
Boselli's cap number for 2003 is 5.7 million after a restructure this year if that helps any...
The one that got away....
"Turley's contract is cap-friendly for the first two years. He counts $2.358 million against the salary cap in '03 and $2.363 million against the cap in '04. His cap number jumps to $5.572 million in '05, and exceeds $6 million in '06, '07, and '08."
