Salary issue may stall Ricky's return.

if he is gonna be an A**hole about wanting 3.7m after what he did to the team than theres a big problem...he still owes 8.6m to the dolphins...if he comes back do they make him pay any of it...because if they dont then 8.6m and 540k equals 9.14m so whats he bitchin about???

Even if Ronnie is the real deal (a fact yet to be proven on the NFL level), he never had more than 175 carries in a year on the college level. Putting him a position right away where he carries 20-30 times a game (approximately 400 carries for the year) would be a guranteed way to shorten his career. Let's hope that Saban is smarter than that!

I'd pay him six million to be the backup before I paid Ricky three to start. Even though Ronnie is going to start.

give him a lot of incentives in the contract...but definately make him earn it!!!

:yell: What a jack@$$$. Day after day I read more crap about this guy. He gets everyone's hopes up that he's gonna do the right thing and come back, take a much deserved pay cut and play for the vet minimum (consider it like community service) Now he wants more $$$? :shakeno:

I hope we can't come to an agreement and this schmuck ends up elsewhere. Trust me, the way he has acted since quitting...er retiring last year, he has no sense of loyalty and he'll keep screwing us up every chance he gets.

YAWN -- get a GRIP. Its his agent spouting off. What the heck do you expect his agent to do? He is in the business of making money too. Steinberg sees his cut reduced by a truckload of money if Ricky plays for $540,000.

Did you expect all this to be a cakewalk? Let it pan out. It will be fine.

If we pay him with David Bowens money is that cool with you>/?

That's sounds right?

Saban gets rid of a hard working good football player, and pays alot of $$$ for an undepandable player, who quit on his team, smokes dope, that is only playing for the love of money.

What lesson will Saban show the team?

I never said it wasn't fair....I just said it's less than he's worth. Ricky is a team player and willing to play for less than fair market value so we can pursue other offensive support (i.e. a line to protect him). He's not holding out for a larger contract (be happy he doesn't have a TO like ego)....he's willing to accept what he signed and the organization should as well.

With all the baggage he brings, I don't think he's worth the min. You seem to think we're trying to sign the player he was in 2002. We're not and no reasonable person expects that. The only casino line I've heard has the over/under on RW's production at 500 yds. In your world we should pay him $7400 a yard.

And I can't believe that you used the term "team player" and RW in the same sentence. This is a guy who quit a week before the season and said he didn't care how it affected the team!

Yes. Yes it is. I've got mixed feelings about bringing Williams back, but I have no doubts that we should not pay a backup DE $2.8 million.

THAT SAID.. If RIcky's contract is void now because he breached the contract, then how is he still property of the Dolphins? They have no contract.
It's not all that unlike the situation with a drafted, but unsigned player. For instance, although Brown hasn't yet signed a contract with the Fins, he's not free to sign with another team. In essence, even though RW was found in breach of his contract with the Fins; they still own his rights as a player.
To me what could become an interesting point would be if RW's agent demands more money than Saban is willing to give and an impasse develops.
IMO Ricky and Steinberg will be pretty flexible. At least that would be the wise thing to do.

Ummmm, when did Ricky or his agent state that he would take the vet minimum. If I remember correctly it was guys like clayton and sports writers stating that if he did come back the Phins have legal and contractual grounds to cut his pay to the bet minimum.

Let's not start putting words into his mouth. See the truth not what you wanna see. Ricky nor his agent till this article ever spoke of contract info.

umm pretty simple to me.. after everything he pulled, if he wont take the 540k, then he shouldn't play at all.. then he should have to pay back 8.5mil.. no compromises should be made.. in comparison,, look at the eagles stance with to.. imo what he is doing is a lot less severe than ricky, and he isn't going to get what he wants.. eagles are willing to draw a line in the sand.. we should do the same.. i dont really want him here anyway.

I'm pretty sure Ricky didn't start this debate, and his agent may not be at fault. This is subtle, but work with me here.

Look at Fanball.com's report on the issue:

Another day, another snag in the speculation about Ricky Williams returning to the NFL. The Miami Herald has raised a debate about whether Williams would be due the $3.7 million base salary under his current contract, or the league minimum of $540,000. According to the Herald, the language in the contract makes it unclear if what Williams would be owed, but his agent Leigh Steinberg said, "I don't see Ricky playing for that ($540,000) figure."

(emphasis mine)

It almost seems to me Jason Cole started putting this story together, talked to five lawyers and THEN talked to Steinberg. The full quote from Cole's article seems to support this:

Agent Leigh Steinberg declined to discuss the matter other than to say, ``I don't see Ricky playing for that [$540,000] figure.

I know sports agents are generally Satan's stepchildren, but before you point to this debate as an instance of RW or Steinberg "starting s***," take another look.
