Steelers Game Reaction. I love this season!

Are those teams that are competing winning Super Bowls without a top or 2nd tier QB? Do they have decent depth? Both of those attributes have been missing from the Dolphins for years. For a long time this franchise has fooled itself into thinking we were 1 or 2 players away and made ridiculous free agent signings. Its refreshing to try this approach to see if we can finally escape mediocrity. This season is about evaluating players who will be here next year, ridding the salary cap of bad contracts and older players eating up money, adding depth and most importantly, draft a QB that can be a top or 2nd tier QB.

For some, it sucks going through this and I feel bad for the older vets who want to play for a championship but after years of disappointment and being stuck in mediocrity, most fans are in favor of this approach.
Im fully in favor of the tear down and re-build, but NOT a "tank" for the overall #1 pick. If we cant grow the team without having the number 1 pick, while having three first round picks, then we have a serious problem. Why go winless just to have first shot at the crapshoot.

Hasn't been tried before in the NFL either. It's worked just fine in other sports.
Well the browns have been tanking for years, that hasn’t worked. The Colts sucked for Luck that didn’t work out. The Lions tanked or lost every game, that didn’t work. Let’s not pretend this is going to cure the problem.

You know there's a difference in being bad on accident and tanking on purpose, right?

Done with Fitz, put Rosen back in let’s see what he has.
Things got bad when he hit #83 right between the 8 and the 3 and he let it bounce off his chest and into the air for the other Fitz to pick it off. Don't see how that's ok QB Fitz. He played very well. At least 3 dropped balls.

This got me interested so I looked at all SB winning teams the past 15 years. It really depends on how you define "terrible season", because just about every SB winner (except the Pats) had a losing record 2-5 years before winning the superbowl.

Seahawks 5-11 - won SB 5 years later (2014)
Broncos 4-12 - won SB 5 years later (2016)
Giants 4-12 - won SB 4 years later (2008)
Saints 3-13 - won SB 3 years later (2010)
Packers 6-10 - won SB 2 years later (2011)
Steelers - 6-10 - won SB 2 years later (2009)

So, first of all, 5 years is an eternity in football and is unlikely to be part of the same plan or staff, but let's take a look to see how those teams got where they did.

Seahawks - Fired Mora and hired Carroll. Drafted Wilson in round 3.
Broncos - Fired coach and GM. Signed FA Peyton Manning.
Giants - Fassel fired, Coughlin hired. Draft day trade for Eli Manning at 1 overall.
Saints - Haslett fired, Peyton hired. Drew Brees signed as FA.
Packers - 6-10 isn't tank level bad to begin with. Rogers already on team (24th pick in '05), first year starting. Defense suffered catastrophic injuries. Were still a TOTAL of 28 points from being 13-3 (lost 7 games by 4 points or less). Still fired almost all assistants.
Steelers - Cowher resigned. Tomlin hired. Big Ben (11th pick in '04) already on team.

None of these were a concerted effort to be bad to get better, most involved firing the head coach, and only one involved drafting a QB 1st overall.

It’s a better plan than going 8-8 forever

If Miami had taken some lumps in 2012-2014 to do 2 things, we’d be living a different story:

1) Build a solid O line, and keep adding depth

2) Hire decent coaches

easier said than done- but focus on that to protect your QB, then take some time growing organically with the occasional superstar acquisition.

Agreed you can grow a team without the first pick and quite frankly, I think Miami will pick second or even third. But having the top pick gives you access to everyone on the board. There's no risk of the team at 1 or 2 picking the guy you covet.

What a stupid question, so I guess the first pick means something else if you tank.
By itself, no, but an entire extra draft worth of picks and the extra picks next year on top of the most cap space in the league does mean something else.

What a stupid response.

Wherever they pick, let's just hope they get it right!

Let’s not move the goalpost back, we’re talking about tanking for the number one pick, not a butt load of picks.
Talk about stupid response.

Right........we ALREADY have a load of picks, without tanking.

LOL at being set at wr and rb. We are bottom five in the nfl at each of those position groups.

Here's your post: "Well the browns have been tanking for years, that hasn’t worked. The Colts sucked for Luck that didn’t work out. The Lions tanked or lost every game, that didn’t work. Let’s not pretend this is going to cure the problem. "

If you want to all of a sudden limit it to the first overall pick and that's it, YOU'RE the one moving the goal posts because that's not the only thing we're doing here which is completely transparent.

Try harder.

Isnt that the reason for the "tank"? The number #1 overall pick?
Isnt that why "tankers" want us to lose every game?
