Tannehill VS Tua Year 1

Discussing Tua is about as awkward as is truly possible. People jump down your throat for just relaying stats. And God forbid you mention Herbert in any way shape or form.
I'm a huge Tua fan and even I get attacked by fanatics. I wish we never drafted Tua to be honest. Being a Dolphin hasn't been as enjoyable with massive rift in our playerbase.
There was a massive rift when we had Tannehill as well maybe even a bigger one or at least equal to the Tua rift. If this is ruining your fan experience maybe take a break from this place, find a classy escort give her a good ol dirty Sanchez.

I don't like extrapolated stats. For example, Tua had 2 picks prior to the bills game. He threw 3 in 1 game. I don't see how an aberration can be used to accurately reflect stats.

That said, Tua needs to play better.

I guess I'm not used to using forums to discuss my team. My best friend of 25 years and fellow fan moved to Bali and is off grid. Guess that's why I'm here.

Not the worst advice I've ever heard.......

Jesus Christ dude, you really just had to do it didn't you? Mods please make it stop!!

So it seems lots of fans think Tua will be a bust.

Tua on his first year only played 9 games. If you calculate the numbers for a full 16 game Season...
Tua 64.1 CMP% VS 58.3 CMP%Tannehill.
Tua 3224 YDS VS 3294 YDS Tannehill
Tua 19 TDS VS 12 TDS Tannehill
Tua 9 INT VS 13 INT Tannehill
Tua 87.1 RTG VS 76.1 RTG Tannehill

I think it is a fact that Tua on year 1 was better than Tannehill, but I dont remember lots of people calling Tannehill a bust after year 1, or sugesting to trade for a QB or drafting a new QB.
It is clear that Tannehills arm was a better one than Tuas is today, but it didnt matter because Tua, despite having no preseason, coming from a very big injury and with lesser arm talent had a better year. Add the fact that Tua had 3 rookies on the OL, and 4 new lineman, a depleted WR group and no running game helping him. Of course one could argue that Fitz played better but that is to be expected from a very intelligent veteran playing a system that he mastered. So, the big difference is that expectation for Tua was way higher. Today, we can agree that Tannehill is a better QB than Fitz and that while neither Tannehill or Fitz are top QBs, none of them suck.
So, to even sugest Tua sucks is crazy at this moment. We need to be patient with him. There are lots of Hall of famers that dont have the arm talent of Marino, Manning or Rodgers. (like Montana, Brees and Brady). If you put a QB that has it in the right system he will shine. I hope the new OCs understand the system in which Tua thrives and I hope Tua improves and show the goods that once had him ranked at the number one college QB. If those happen one should expect at least a better QB than what Tannehill and Fitz are today. That should be a top 10 QB, and thats not bad. At all.
Tannehill's rankings in those categories were (as a project QB):

20th in yards
23rd in Comp%
28th in TDs
17th in INTs
27th in Rating

Tua's rankings woulda been (extrapolated):

19th in yards (+1)
29th in Comp% (-6)
20th in TDs (+8)
13th in INTs (+4)
26th in Rating (+1)

So overall, Tua's rookie campaign was 8 positions in the standings better, amongst 5 measurables...so basically 1.6 positions better than Tannehill's on average. As a 'generational' talent compared to a project. Also have to bear in mind, Tannehill's system was basically the same as he ran in college (same OC too), so he didn't really have any playbook challenges, had a full off-season to work toward the position, had vastly more starter snaps, and was fully healthy.

I'm not making an argument in any direction, just pointing out some context.

This all won't matter when Tua blows up this year though.

In my world, you are either

The comparison of RTs OL being better than TTs and TTs OL being mostly rooks sent me over the edge.

TTs OL last year was possibly better than any RT had. For ef's sake, Dallas Thomas is one of the worst OL in history and we couldn't get rid of him for anything.

RT finally got an OL and RB and his true potential AND ceiling were realized.

But irregardless, some of his shortcomings were seen here. Those haven't changed.

We are seeing shortcomings in Tua now. If our team philosophy cannot overcome them, he will fail when opposing coaches scheme to them.

I don't care about stats. I care about winning championships. And while I know it takes time, that does not mean time will make every player better or elite

You have to identify their floor and ceiling correctly and determine if that range of execution can elevate your team to championships. If he can't, make the wise decision and cut bait before it details your team for 3-5 years trying to fix him.
Good post.

Tannehill works well with Tennessee and I'm happy for him. In 2016, with Ajayi going off, Tannehill was putting it together for Miami.

But you're right. His shortcomings are still there. Specifically, he's not a quick processor and will take unnecessary sacks. With Tennessee, he is getting rid of the ball more quickly.

Tua's arm strength has been questioned, but I think accuracy is more important. Still, there are times that arm strength does matter.

The NE type offense that Brady ran for years would seem like a great fit for Tua.

I dont think people are saying Tua suck. They just dont know right now. Time will tell w Tua. Tua played basic last yr..we need see more..to get better evaluation off Tua.
No. They are clearly saying he sucks

Tannehill had arguably a worse oline his rookie year.
Tuas arm strength is a concern, but his vision and anticipation are much better than RT17.
I would give RT17 a durability edge at this point.
Tua is our QB. Hopefully he plays well and there will be no more questions after the first preseason game.
