***The 2008 Atlanta Braves Thread***

So the paper said that Jurjjens (or however it's spelled) had a nice debut yesterday. It's really early but this is a good start. I think they really need this guy to make the starting rotation.

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. — Javy Lopez had an eventful afternoon in his first Braves game since 2003.
The 37-year-old catcher had a two-run homer and sacrifice fly and was charged with two throwing errors in a 10-2 win against the Dodgers at Champion Stadium.

re; Tex going to Baltimore.

yeah, it is home to him, but they've consistently shown the ability to spend gobs of money and produce nothing. plus they are in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox, who will not be outspent. so if Tex goes there, he can be a hometown hero, but not expect to win many division titles are wild cards.

and in situations like this where the wife is from Georgia and he travels as much as he does during the season, Atlanta might get a home team discount. she will not want to leave by the end of this season.

i seriously worry about the Yankees throwing a ridiculous amount of cash at him more than i do Baltimore.

to me, the biggest catch is if the Braves aren't contenders this year in the East. then Tex might see the pitching staff as over the hill and the Braves as a fading power, and look elsewhere.

If they win the division this year he'll be more likely to stay IMO. I doubt they would get that much of a discount. Chances are that he's gone after this season.

With Scott Boras as an agent I also doubt we get any discount unless Tex pulls an Arod and stops talking to him.

i am probably jinxing things by even bringing it up, but apparently Mike Hampton had a really good outing yesterday. 2 innings pitched, no runs given up. looked and felt good.

If Hampton can stay relatively healthy we would have a pretty decent starting rotation. It would at least be better than last year's. And that could in turn help the bullpen who wouldn't have to pitch so much if we can give it to them in the 7th instead of the 6th.

Wow Hampton with two scoreless innings and no injuries. It would be huge if he can be what he once was again this season.

I'm sure Chipper's fine. He'll probably just sit a couple of weeks or something. Hopefully. Who cares, everybody knows Atlanta doesn't have a chance in the division anyway. The mighty Mets and Phils are a lock, right? At least if you ask the media or fans who are dying for their teams to stop being owned for good.

I hope this isn't one of those lingering things with Chipper. He is usually able to play through injuries. But they seem to hamper him enough to where he can't get back to fully healthy. Hopefully its just a spring training thing.

I definitely think we can compete with the Mets and Phils. But we have very, very little margin for error. The wild card is always tight. Chances are the Rockies, Dbacks, Mets, and Phils will all at least strongly contend for the wild card along with their divisions.

Braves manager Cox raves about Curacao native's outing
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Braves manager Bobby Cox was denied the opportunity to enjoy a combined no-hitter. But he still left Chain of Lakes Park on Wednesday feeling good about what he'd seen from his pitchers, namely Jair Jurrjens.
