Tua Tagovailoa has given Dolphins answers they needed and earned new contract

Last time I checked he is signed through 2024 and is scheduled to make around $23 million next season. Everybody seems to be in a big rush to sign to a huge contract extension this upcoming offseason. I would let him play out his current contract and then decide what to do based on how he performs the rest of this season and next season. If worst comes to worst they can always use the franchise tag on him in 2025.
No can do. They will need that $23M number down for next season if they want to keep Wilkins, Hunt, Williams and AVG and also to stop Tua possibly holding out.

Using the franchise tag in 2025 is definitely a no go as there is no way they can have a $50M hit in that year.

You give him the extension, you use void years to kick the big hit further down the road just like the Eagles have done with Hurts. Miami has barely made use of void years. This means that he won’t be counting as a 45-50M cap hit until 2027 or even 2028 when the cap will likely be way over 300M by then. Not extending him after this season leads to the team having zero leverage in 2025 when trying to get a deal done. Also if he’s top 5 again in all metrics then the price goes up even higher.

Good, then you also think no other players on this team deserves any extensions until we reach the SB.
No because here is the difference. They would have to pay Tua between $40 to $50 million a year and players at other positions don’t come close to making that much. The bottom line is if Tua can’t step up in big games then he shouldn’t be paid like a top tier QB.

So that means the Bills, Eagles, Chargers and Bengals all made a mistake in giving their QB’s a second contract as they haven’t won a Super Bowl?
I would say only the Chargers have so far because both the Eagles and Bengals made it to a Super Bowl and the Bills should have that one year before choking at the end of the Chiefs game in the AFC Championship Game. We will see if a coaching change helps the Chargers.

BS because they can restructure other contracts to get the salary cap number down this offseason. Until Tua can prove he could win big games he shouldn’t be paid like a top tier QB. Do you think the Giants regret paying Daniel Jones that huge contract? I guarantee you they do.

I completely disagree. He has not come up big in one single important game. The only game we have been competitve in against the Bills lately was the playoff game Skylar Thompson started last January. Tua is pretty good when he is not being pressured and can stay in the pocket. Against more physical teams like the Eagles, Chiefs and Bills....? Not so much.
Ravens last year duh

Well that’s because Daniel Jones isn’t as good as Tua, not even close. They got bent over a barrel because they left it too late to negotiate. Do the Chargers and their fans regret giving Herbert his deal? What about the Eagles with Hurts who is back to average this year again?

Even with cuts and restructures (only ones they can do really are Tyreek, Ramsey and Chubb) they still need to get Tua’s $23M cap hit down or there will be zero space for signings. Remember they won’t get X’s $18M until June 1. Basic cuts like Ogbah, Baker, Crossen , Jeff Wilson will only get them back to around the cap. It’s the restructures that will provide the space to re-sign and bring new guys in.

So you would be fine with giving Tua $40 to $50 million a year even if he never wins in the playoffs? Ya he might be better than Daniel Jones but he is also no Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, or Lamar Jackson and never will be. Those guys can carry a team on their back and Tua can’t.

Yes I would be as that is market rate for a top QB. Completely disagree with the whole “carry a team on their back” nonsense. That only seems to be reserved for guys who run around and make a flashy play now and again.

As I said in another post the Dolphins are 1-8 the last 2 seasons when Tua has an average or below average game (92 or below passer rating). The Bills are 9-6 in the same timespan. Obviously Allen is not only having more stinkers than Tua but the Bills are still winning because of a team effort.

Tua is doing a lot of carrying for the team, they only win we he plays above average but people just don’t notice it because he doesn’t scramble around making highlight plays.

And there is no way I would pay him that much if he can’t win the big games regardless of his market value because the whole objective is to win when it counts the most. Let’s see if he can do it this Sunday night but so far he hasn’t done it in these situations.

If we don’t win a playoff game with Tua on his rookie contract that sucks. We’re gonna pay him I have no doubt, and we’re probably gonna be mediocre for another 20yrs as well, it’s the Dolphins way.

Is Tua one serious concussion away from retirement?
Great question and only a moron on this site would ridicule you for asking such a logical one at that!!! How are you supposed to know as a casual fan? Do we have access to medical records? NO!! Don't listen to the forum gestapo............

That is why they have google.

Use it.

Will answer many of your questions. 😂

No.

You see, the standard was simply making the SB.

It's a very specific standard.

But then it doesn't matter anymore and the standard becomes BS when he makes an exception for Allen who's come close enough

In other words, the SB standard is a bogus standard.

It's just another absurd goal post moving standard.

But, when you consider guys like Kaepernick and Newton would have gotten extensions from him, but not Tua. Kinda tells you all you need to know about the standard.

If Miami makes it to the SB, does anyone really believe Largo will be the first poster calling for Tua to be extended?

I think Tua will accept a relatively team friendly deal @$45m. He has proven himself in many ways BUT also has a few areas he needs to improve. If I am Grier, I also look at QBs in late rounds every year (especially strong armed ones) to develop as insurance, back ups or even trade value in the future.

Okay so there has been 2 QBs since the Rookie Wage Scale took effect to win a Superbowl on their rookie deals.

Russell Wilson in 13...... carried by a historic defense and is obviously not a great QB in hindsight.
You guys have conveniently selective memories regarding Russell Wilson. He has been phenomenal the vast majority of his career, including with the Seahawks long after that defense fell apart.

But let's retreat to his rookie year. Everybody has apparently forgotten that one. The defense was so great Wilson had a 27-7 playoff deficit at Atlanta in the 4th quarter. Wilson proceeded to break the all time record for playoff passing yards by a rookie. He rallied the Seahawks to 3 consecutive touchdowns and a 28-27 lead with 31 seconds remaining.

The Seattle defense blew the game.

I could go on and on. In the prior playoff game Wilson rallied Seattle from a 14 point road deficit at Washington. That was the game Robert Griffin was terrific early then got hurt, impacting the remainder of his career.

During the season they won the Super Bowl, Seattle trailed the 49ers by 4 points in the 4th quarter of the NFC Championship Game. Wilson threw a 35 yard touchdown pass on 4th down. Everyone remembers the Super Bowl rout over Denver and wants to pretend every playoff game unfolded that way. It is sheer ignorance.

When Seattle returned to the Super Bowl the following season that impenetrable defense allowed Green Bay to take a 16-0 lead at Seattle early in the second quarter of the NFC Championship Game. Wilson had to rally them all the way back, capped by a 35 yard touchdown pass for the game winner in overtime.

Russell Wilson took a big risk when he left the Seahawks and the familiarity of Pete Carroll and that offense. I thought it was a big mistake. He is paying for it now, in terms of damaged reputation from fans with inept memories and lingering bias.

But I also thought Pete Carroll was making a big mistake leaving USC.
