No can do. They will need that $23M number down for next season if they want to keep Wilkins, Hunt, Williams and AVG and also to stop Tua possibly holding out.Last time I checked he is signed through 2024 and is scheduled to make around $23 million next season. Everybody seems to be in a big rush to sign to a huge contract extension this upcoming offseason. I would let him play out his current contract and then decide what to do based on how he performs the rest of this season and next season. If worst comes to worst they can always use the franchise tag on him in 2025.
Using the franchise tag in 2025 is definitely a no go as there is no way they can have a $50M hit in that year.
You give him the extension, you use void years to kick the big hit further down the road just like the Eagles have done with Hurts. Miami has barely made use of void years. This means that he won’t be counting as a 45-50M cap hit until 2027 or even 2028 when the cap will likely be way over 300M by then. Not extending him after this season leads to the team having zero leverage in 2025 when trying to get a deal done. Also if he’s top 5 again in all metrics then the price goes up even higher.
