Want to keep Grant now.

I'll be down with what Flores decides.

I like Grant and he has flipped the field and had a positive impact on games. But he doesn't offer much as a wide receiver.
That would be an interesting stat for returns beyond yards. FieldFlip %

That’s crazy. 11.4 is not JAG territory. Since the Jurassic period, anything over 10 put you in the pro bowl conversation. Dude, that’s some serious 63% above average. Wow.

If you look at all time punt return leaders based on average yards per return, 11.4 (if he averaged that every year) would make him the 14th best PR in NFL history. That’s not a JAG - nice attempt at fuzzy math. Your “11.4 isn’t much more than 7.0” is like saying the average rate of lung cancer is 1 per 1,000 people. If you bake in the sun all day it’s 3 per 1,000 people. The net difference of “2” isn’t much. Cmon.

What you are missing... and I'm wondering if it is deliberate... is how little this matters.

An average punt return is about 7 yards... so he gets us an average of 4.4 more yards per punt. Big woop...

4.4 yards times his 29 punt returns per year is a laughably low number. Huuuge benefit to the team... not.

Hey Tua... whatcha gonna do with that extra 4 yards? Are you goin' to Disneyland?

At 1.5 punt returns per game... that's 7 extra yards per game. Wow! WHAT A FIELD FLIP BABEE!!°

And on top of that, those extra 4 yards are extremely volatile with Grant given the muffs and all. One big return seriously affect the average on 29 attempts... Im pretty sure teams would give up a bit on the extra 4 yards for a more reliable/solid option, especially if he's the highest paid specialist in the league and will pretty much be a rarely used gimmick player on offense. Grant is absolutely not a top 6 WR on the Fins anymore.

4 mill is way way way too much for a return guy. Cut Grant and replace with league minimum guy.
It's not only the $ factor for me.

I prefer the roster spot, which is really more valuable than a million dollars here or there, go to either a player who is more versatile, or a young guy with upside potential.

I expect to keep 6 receivers, and also expect to use all of them in offensive roles throughout the season.

This theory that the bottom of the receiver room doesn't need to see the field on offense is flawed in the context of a "complete" roster.

To me, this is staggeringly obvious.

One Punt Return TD every other year and an extra 4 yards per return? Really?

We don't even know if Bowden (or one of the others) couldn't give us the exact same thing. It's not like they might not be just as, or almost as good. Hell, if the muffs and drops went away, we'd be up on that deal.

I don't see the value here... his money could go to something we need more... like one more pass rusher, or a few bucks thrown to one of our coming free agents...

Grant is a cool guy; he is exciting, but ultimately, he has not provided us with much in the way of tangible results-- becoming the 2nd string all-pro punt returner is nice, but how many games did it help us win? Zero.

@Mach2

I think saving a few million is vital this year to give us safety net in case we need to sign additional FAs in case of injury. Salary cap is too tight this year.
We are cutting it close, no doubt.

There will be roster cuts that save a little, regardless.

One situation is with exactly what we are discussing here. Between Grant, Hurns, and Wilson, at least two are gone solely due to a numbers standpoint. Fed.....lham(?) Is also a likely cut because there is no dead money involved.

How much is "enough" for in season pickups? IDK the exact answer here.

I would say that having depth decreases the need for worry. It's not like there are a bunch of starter quality guys sitting at home, waiting in the phone to ring.

I do agree though. There needs to be a rainy day fund just in case, and any leftover $ gets rolled forward. No downside.

Heh! Most Punt Returners are young and very, very cheap. We have THE highest paid PR in the league.
Who also is a kr, not JUST a pr. Grant has us in good field position 98% of the time AND (as you seem to have ommitted) he has 5 return scores on top of that in his short career. I also want to see what i call a JET SET of fuller, waddle, albert wilson and Grant. With that 4 wide set, someone (or more) WILL be wide open!! Grant is a busy, productive player and is worth his money. He is a great kid and works his butt off. Another feather or two in his hat.
