You have to be able to do both effectively. Interesting statistic: the 3 best teams in the NFC last season were #30, #31, and #32 in passing attempts per game. These teams all had young quarterbacks who weren't really able to shoulder the load of carrying their respective offenses on their backs, yet they went a combined 37-10. Two of them played in the NFC championship game, and that #32 team just happened to win the Super Bowl. And I like that #32 team's chance to repeat because they are able to put more on their quarterback as he develops and be better for it, as opposed to putting it all on him and then wondering why they went 8-8.

You have to threaten with the run and the pass in order to be successful in football. What is perplexing about the Dolphins right now is that we don't really threaten teams with our awful passing game, yet we're still refusing to run the ball, and we have continued with the same ineffective passing routes and concepts for two weeks in a row. Bill Lazor needs to right this ship quickly, because it's taking on water fast and he is as culpable as the crummy QB right now.

We're true to the Packers offense. Live and die by the pass.

For OP's topic, I'd say Jim Harbaugh intrigues me more than any other choice.
I think personally the guy's kind of annoying, but he's a guy that would give Miami a lot of energy, swagger, and bring on the heat against the other AFC coaches.
Can you imagine all of the hype going into a Ravens/Miami game? It'd be a lot of fun to watch.

I think the 49ers starting to slide is more due to Kaepernick being inconsistent than anything in the media about Harbaugh losing the locker-room.
I used to be a big Kapernick fan when he was at Nevada, so I don't blame SF at all for drafting him.
Problem is, he's now uber-popular in the NFL so I doubt they can just move on from him now that he has a big fan-base. Trying to be a flashy winning QB but not really fundamentally a great NFL QB.

I think Harbaugh in Miami with Lazor as OC, a high-round QB prospect, and Tannehill or Moore as backup, is what the Fins need.

5 people voted Philbin !!! I thought that was one thing on Finheaven that we were unanimous about :)

Criticism of Harbaugh is laughable. He does nothing but win, and win the right way. He does nothing but develop qb's to the best of their abilities. He's competitive and a former NFL quarterback who demands respect. His teams play physical and are well rounded. 2 NFC championships and a super bowl appearance after taking over a 6-10 team. He's proven at the NFL level.

We do not need any damn trainees in the head coach's office. Look at Philbie's debacle from this week. That's what a trainee looks like.

People criticizing Harbaugh have an axe to grind with his personality. That's not why you don't like a coach. Shula was a hard ass, smart, and he was driven. He won. Sparano was a hard worker but a moron. Philbie is an administrator. Harbaugh has the Shula-like traits. He would be a massive upgrade and anyone thinking otherwise is fooling himself.

Quinn will need training as a head man. Who knows what he can do as a head coach. Harbaugh is an outstanding coach. Beyond all that, this team badly needs a tremendous leader. Harbaugh is that guy. Sumlin has those traits. Malzahn is a schemer who can win different ways and a smart guy. We need a high end coach. Not an unproven coordinator.

Question 1: Why would Kevin Sumlin, or Gus Malzahn leave for the NFL, and if they did don't you think they would pick a better team?
Question 2: What makes you think that they will even have success in the NFL?

Comparing Jon "Childish Antics" Horriblebaugh to The Don Shula... :refuse: I wish I could reach thru the interwebz and slap some sense into you.

You're right, I don't know if they would go. But, other coaches have done it. Some coaches like the challenge of competing at the highest level, with rules legislating competitive balance. In college, you can recruit whoever. In the NFL you are limited to a salary cap and what the draft dictates for you. It's a level of competition they may like. Harbaugh came up to the big leagues and excelled. Jimmy Johnson did too. Chip Kelly has the NFL perplexed by his system. It can be done.

As for success, they have been head coaches and have top end credentials. You can say for anyone that you don't know about the prospects for success. But I like Sumlin's ability to lead and run a show. Malzahn I like more for schematic brainpower.

You take a coordinator type who hasn't run his own show, and you're going to see Mike Pettine acting like a buffoon about his quarterbacks. Or Gus Bradley. Or Joe Philbin, who 3 years in still doesn't have his training wheels off.

just curious, how many better teams will be needing a head coach?

Or Sean Payton. Or Mike McCarthy. Or John Harbaugh.

1. Don Shula.

Sign him for 1-2 years, let him take Lazor under his wing and teach him how to be a HC. I think Lazor has a lot of potential.

2. Cowher / Chucky / Harbaugh, any are fine.

No college coaches, they all suck. No Kubiak, omg.

Any particular reason Sean Payton's name is being tossed around? I didn't know he was on the hot seat.

I appreciate the concern with Harbaugh, but if you're talking the surest bet, he's clearly the guy. His teams are always tough, he wins every year no matter where he goes. Before Harbaugh, SF was in a very similar slump to Miami. They had more talent, but he took over a BAD team that had been bad for a long time. Harbaugh's had his teams in the SB or a play away from the SB every season he's coached in the NFL. If you can get that, you do it. Like others, I don't anticipate Miami being a viable option for him, but from our side, he's clearly the surest thing.

Talent is awesome. Performance is truth.

Sean Payton was mentioned because he went from OC to HC and is without a doubt one of the 5 best coaches in the league. He's not going anywhere it was a counter argument that coordinators CAN have success in the NFL
