Hyde: Draft Winds IV - A thorough breakdown of Cam Newton (w/ video)

Well as always CK great work and thank you. I will admit that I am one of the people who has dismissed Cam Newton and Probably unfairly. I think the most telling things for me were the quotes from college scouts saying that Cam would have to show that he was more than just a pocket passer. I still don't think that Cam Newton is the #1 QB but he definately moved up on my list after reading this. I was impressed by some of the throws he made on post routes, the ball had zip and he fit it in to some small windows which is what I really didn't think he was capable of doing. This kid still has a lot to prove but all of the QBs in this class do.

The throws at 7:25 and 9:45 of the second video (pocket passing) are my two favorite throws he's ever made...

That's good work by you guys of covering all the bases for the most part regarding Cam Newton..

Next up... Ryan Mallett... it's worth it.

aslong as it's not locker.................

Well let me put it to you this way. Let's say you're on the phone with the Buffalo Bills and they want Cam Newton at #3 overall but despite normal rules about trading within the division, they decide that if we'd give them Cam Wake and the #15 pick, then we can have him. What do you do?
Wow i just broke a sweat thinking about this one. I am not sure i would do it. We have given away people in the past that were good for us and ended up regretting it. I say no. I ONLY SAY NO BECAUSE WE COULD POTENTIALLY HAVE ANOTHER JT ON OUR HANDS.
A bird in the hand......you know the rest.

We've also failed to pull the trigger on quarterbacks in the past, because we were too scared...and ended up regretting that.

So which lesson do you learn from?

It's really a hard question I'm not saying there's a right answer.

Love Wake, but to me . . . it's not a difficult decision.

Now don't get me wrong................I want Cam Newton as our 1st round pick. I just hope we could move up to get him in a fashion that does not involve Jake Long or Cam Wake.

If you give up Wake who in the heck on our D is going to pressure the QB? No one is, and the opposing QB's will pick us apart.

Not to belabor the point but I think Miami is going into a phase from a personnel standpoint where their coverage is going to start reaching "lockdown" proportions. Sean Smith and Vontae Davis both improved this season. I firmly believe both players will continue to improve. Nolan Carroll genuinely looks like a good find in the 5th round and I think he should continue to improve. Then you have Will Allen coming back and he has versatility and is able to keep guys covered up. The safeties may lack big play ability but they've actually been decent cover guys, and Reshad Jones is a nice little wildcard to throw in there seeing him improve. Koa Misi's coverage is improving a lot, and Karlos Dansby is one of the best coverage linebackers out there. Then you have A.J. Edds, who was supposed to be a coverage specialist right away as a rookie, coming in for special downs and he might give us something.

Then you look at the defensive line aside from Cam Wake and Jared Odrick is more of a pass rusher than a run stopper at this point, Kendall Langford's pass rush improved tremendously, Randy Starks is a good pass rusher, and even Paul Soliai was barreling straight through the middle of the offensive line to create pressure up the middle. No, without Cam Wake we would not have that guy that drives the pass rush, but there's more than one way to skin the cat and I believe the defense could manage with a replacement in playing in his spot. Maybe you take a Chris Carter later in the Draft or if Dontay Moch starts to fall.

One of the key strengths of the Packers on defense was that they could lose a player, or multiple players, and still roll right along. I think Miami has that kind of quality on defense. I don't think anything would be 'over' for the defense just because they lose a Cam Wake, which is a good thing because injuries in the NFL happen (knock on wood).

We definitely have more capability to lose guys on defense than on offense, but Wake would be a tremendous loss. I wonder if they would toy with moving Dansby outside until we found a suitable replacement . . . maybe run with an Edds/Crowder combo inside until we found a suitable pass rusher to throw on the weakside. I wonder if Moses is ready to be a full time pass rush guy on the weakside.

I fully agree that Wake and a first is doable if you have your guy to trade up for . . . Miami needs to make sure that Cam Newton is that guy. This team is good enough to compete now, this isn't the time to play craps with this budding defense unless you are certain you found your future signal caller.

would green bays d have been as good as it was this postseason if the opposition didn't have to account for clay matthews on every play??? i don't think so...and if you lose cam wake you lose your own clay matthews...cam wake has lead the league in sacks type skills...and he's only 28 he's got 5 years of top level production easy in him...

i'd give up a lot of guys on this roster for the opportunity to get cam newton...kendall langford (which the bills could use) #15 and a early pick next year but cam wake is worth a top 10 pick by himself easy...i'd want a andrew luck type clean as a whistle prospect in return if cam wakes part of the package

mel kipers latest mock updated today feb 16 says cams going top 5...no blaine gabbert in the top 5...top 5 picks fairley, bowers, newton, green, miller

* Cam Newton, QB, Auburn
From the day he landed on the Big Board for the first time, I've said that Newton's physical skills and underrated ability as a passer could lead him all the way to the top of the draft. In Buffalo, what you have is an ideal foundation for his career. The Bills can keep Ryan Fitzpatrick around and develop Newton at a slower pace. But given Newton's total package of skills and size, and his proven ability as a guy who can adapt, deal with adversity and win, he represents a real possibility to land in the top five.
