You're the GM in 2014: How do you fix this team?

I would fire Coyle and replace him with a 3-4 defensive coach, Fire Philbin and replace him with Whisenhunt, spend the money on Soliai and return to the 3-4 both new LBrs come from that system, would also move Dion to OLB....the money spent in FA will be on the OL, resign Grimes and Patterson and then get out of the way and let the coach develop what we have which is a very young team....

Finding a safety to replace Jones should be a priority. He is garbage. I don't care how much we signed him for. He is a huge liability in the secondary.

I understand your point, but unless you know something that I ignore, it's almost impossible to get both Soliai and Starks back. Explain this please.

What is there to explain? You pay them. You get rid of either one, particularly Starks, and this line is a shell of itself. Odrick can't replace Starks. Go watch how often Starks is double-teamed compared to Odrick. It would be a mistake to let either go. There are plenty of other over-paid players around here...and it isn't them.

(1) I'd get a new Offensive Coordinator and O-line coach. I think that Sherman is overprotective of Tannehill and it could be good to find someone with proven skills in developing QB's (preferably in a west coast system). Turner has been a disappointment coaching the O-line. The JMart situation should never have occurred. He should have been closer to the players.
(2) I'd look for O-line talent in free agency and in the draft.
(3) I'd look for a tough experienced RB in free agency. The best that I could afford. That doesn't mean that I'm giving up on Lamar Miller. I still think that he could be good, it's just having an each way bet.
(4) Re-sign Brent Grimes, the finest free agent purchase that Jeff Ireland has ever made.

1) My first action without doubt would be to sign Brent Grimes until 2017.
2) Install Dolphins' Culture Commission leaded by players and a pair of assessors. This commission would serve to avoid future cases like Martin and create a better environment.
3) Assuming Gary Kubiak's days as Houston HC are numbered, then replace Jim Turner with current Texans' OL coach John Benton.
4) Move Mike Sherman to HC Assistant; bring Gary Kubiak as Offensive Coordinator. Mike Sherman would focus on helping Joe Philbin and follow up Ryan Tannehill's development.
5) Add better medical staff for the team, focused on rehab & conditioning.
6) Bring back some of my own free agents: Paul Soliai, Pat Devlin, Chris Clemons, Nolan Carroll.
7) Inquire for Jimmy Graham's price and bring Dustin Keller back after double-checking knee.
8) Hire OL free agents: Ryan Harris, Eugene Monroe & Charles Brown. In order to distract negotiations, inquire for Jordan Gross & keep talks with Tyson Clabo's agent.
9) Hire RB free agent: Darren McFadden.
10) Hire KR/PR specialist free agent: Ted Ginn Jr.
11) Trade a late round pick for Justin Blackmon.
12) Upgrade the staff of scouts/headhunters to explore every potential draft gem.
13) Draft plan: BPA in each round, trading down a pair of times during draft and focusing on filling: RB, OL(2), DL(2), LB (2).
14) Add enough quality UDFA to compete for backup spots at RB, OL, LB & CB(2).
15) Hire an agent in New Zealand to find within rugby league a K/P with superior quality than ours.
16) Explore options to move some training camps to a high city in South America, in order to promote the NFL and get additional conditioning.

Lots of great ideas but the best punters play Australian rules football, not rugby or rugby league. Even most knowledgeable rugby and rugby league players would be honest enough to admit that the AFL punters are far superior. But this is not really applicable to Miami because we already have the best punter in the game in Fields. And he continues to get better.

Resign Grimes. Period.
Resign Big Paul AND Randy. IDC, I want them both.
Resign Clemons to a 2yr/7.5mil or another cheap incentive driven contract.
Let Patterson walk, time for young buck CB to step in (assuming they are ready)
(I hate Carroll but he'll be far cheaper than Patterson unless Dmitri can get healthy...and stay healthy to deserve contract #s)
Draft a DT, LB and FS to develop. We need depth here. Especially if we don't resign both bulls in Solai and Starks. LB depth is terrible and we could use more depth at FS
Resign Marlon Moore to ST. The guy fills this role very well.

Draft a OT and OG and sign one. A total of three new lineman. Keep Brenner, Garner, and Pouncey. Maybe jerry if he's cheap enough.
Sign a veteran RB. I like MJD for cheap or McFadden for cheap. McFadden might want too much and not worth more than 3.5 guaranteed IMO. Ben Tate is also available but I question his ability as an every down back even with his success behind a good line. He will also want to get paid and we should NOT NOT NOT overpay for a Veteran Back when there are so many options available.
Keep the WR core we have. IDC what u people say this is the best receiving core we have had (albeit injured) in years.
If Keller is healthy enough to return, sign him at a cheap low guaranteed contract. He will be cheap if proven healthy.
If not healthy, then address via draft or look at other options via FA i.e---Pitta, Garrett Graham, Pettigrew......and my dream signing...Jimmy F-n Graham....( I can dream)
And by the grace of god show MArcus Thigpen the door and slam it on his face. This needs no further explanation.

It's not going to happen. They're both on the other side of 30. The options are one or none, not both. The point was made pretty clear last year by releasing both Karlos Dansby & Kevin Burnett, both very good LBs, that our defense will not be comprised of a bunch of 30+ year old men.

You realize Grimes plays CB & will be 31 next year right? You can give him a 4 year deal until 2017 but there better be very little signing bonus involved.

I am not arguing "what is going to happen"...I am saying "what I would do." And I would keep both of them...

Ideal off-season

Free Agency -
1. Resign - Grimes, Patterson, Carroll, Soliai, and Jerry
2. Sign - Brandon Albert (LT), Austin Howard (RT), Wade Smith (OG), Ben Tate (RB)
3. Draft
Round 1 - Eric Ebron (TE)
Round 2 - Martin, Yankey, Steen, Sua-Filo (All Gs)....which ever is available
Round 3 - Jeremiah Attaochu (OLB)
Round 4 - 7 (haven't looked close enough at the draft yet to get into these rounds, but would like to pick up DL, LB, S)

Offense

LT - Albert
LG - Smith
C - Pouncey
RG - Martin
RT - Howard
WR - Wallace
WR- Harline
WR - Gibson
TE - Ebron
RB - Tate
QB Tannehill
TE2/HB - Clay

Defense
DE - Wake
DT - Soliai
DT - Odrick
DE - Jordan
LB - Misi
LB - Ellerbe
LB - Wheeler/Attaochu
CB - Grimes
CB - Patterson/Carroll
N - (hopefully one of the rookies steps up)
S - Clemons
S - Jones (hoping and praying he returns to form)

Again, this is just ideal and I'm delving into the land of fantasy, but I think this would vastly improve the line and add a red zone playmaker

I would be very leary of keeping Patterson in light of him consistently re-injuring that groin. I certainly wouldn't resign him unless he agrees to tie salary to starts or lowers his asking price.

I like a lot of that but I wouldn't drop the coin on Tate and I wouldn't make paying a right tackle in free agency a priority...I would also let Patterson walk and resign Carroll to compete with Taylor and Davis...

Finally with this staff Ebron would be losing reps with clay and sims here already...early at Least...and you better get another dt for the rotation in the 2 deep at least with upside...

I would cut wheeler period...I don't care the cap hit...he's killing me

I'd trade our 1st round pick in 2015 to move up and draft an injured RB in the 3rd round this year. I'd then waste our 2nd round pick as we always do and then pass on playmaker in the first round to draft a DE that can back up Wake and play part time for the next 4 years. You say that's what we always do? Well, there're a lot of people here that want to keep Ireland cause "we don't want to start over" even tho we've been starting over every year since Ireland got here.

Ozzy rules!!
