1 NFL Fan Base Is Desperately Wishing For DeVonta Smith

amazing how much opinions change after 0 more football games have been played between then and now
The offseason (FA) and the Undie Olympics where FOs think they are that one player away glaring mistakes are made

It seems the NFL covets parity many months for GMs to outwit themselves by spending millions on FA on average free agent talent and GMs fall for players based on unofficial Pro Daytimes

The tape is the real McCoy - they say he will wear down (hard to predict) but Smith is really good and I prefer 5 years of really good to 7 years of D Parker mediocrity

Its crazy how there isn’t ONE thing anyone can take away from him on the football field. Not ONE!
Being surrounded by a loaded team...he won’t have that luxury in the NFL...he will actually have to face teams of equal or even greater talent...and beat opponents who are as fast or faster and will certainly be bigger and stronger.

Look, he may have a successful NFL career....but to ignore the above because your wrapped up in college numbers of a player at an ultra elite program...is very risky!

Archie Griffin...Ohio State running back...back to back Heisman trophy’s....never rushed for a 1000 yards in 7 NFL seasons!

Yikes! So we’re resorting to he may not succeed because he played on a loaded team and therefore his accomplishments were a mirage and likely inflated.

Righhhhhjttttt!

I guess that logic doesn’t apply to other top prospects.

Once OP came up with the thread Chase was lazy and not a team player (or along those lines) and showed his huge bama bias his threads are ..., but yet he managed a swipe at Dan Marino on another thread for not winning a SB.... should stick to cricket OP if you’re from Trinidad ;-))))

History and stats prove that your safest route BY FAR to a top WR in the NFL is to draft him in the first round from an SEC programme.

The reason for that could be a number of things, but maybe the biggest one addresses your first point. SEC defenses are loaded with future NFL talent and are extremely well coached.

So while NFL DBs will be a little bigger and even better coached, history shows that a top SEC wideout has a better chance of being a good NFL wideout than anyone else.

Factor in that this isn't just a top SEC WR, but a record-breaking, Heisman-winning, multi-talented WR who faced not just good but great DBs and smoked them....

He could still bust and his weight could play a part but the odds look good for him being successful.

This rationale applies equally to Chase, btw. Don't tell me he didn't come from a loaded programme in 2019....

Other top prospects aren’t 166 pounds at his height....you usually see 5’6”-5’8” next to someone that light.....

I don’t doubt he will have some level of success in the NFL, the debate is whether you spend a top 6 pick on someone that extremely slight...it’s about value and not potentially risking a pick that valuable on someone that may not hold up physically to the professional level.

No, Alabama is not the professional level!

And again....let’s remember this number 6 pick cost us Two first rounders, doesn’t seem like prudent risk for a GM to make that selection?

At 12 or in a tradedown I’m good with making that pick!

Yes...but Chase is 40 pounds heavier at the same height.

Two first round picks on a 166 pound receiver? Not me.......

Also, Archie Griffin won back to back Heisman trophy’s at Ohio State and was not a star in 7 pro seasons...No need to discuss how many Heisman winners were mediocre in the NFL.

There have been 38 wide receivers who weighed 175 pounds or less at the scouting combine since 2000, according to pro-football-reference.com and only two of them became first-round picks: Tavon Austin and Marquise Brown.

But Austin was listed at 5-8, Brown at 5-9. They just have different physiques. In that time span, there have been nine wide receivers weigh 175 or less and stand at least 5-11.

Not one of them has been a first-round pick. Two were second-round picks: Paul Richardson and Todd Pinkston.

Of the 38, only one really became an impact player in the NFL, and that's DeSean Jackson. But even then Jackson was a bit different because he was more compact (5-10, 169) and he also ran a 4.35, compared to the reported 4.49 time for Smith.
