Greg Roman
I know Harbaugh is looked at as some sort of genius, but you don't make it in the NFL without great coordinators. Just like Shula had guys like Arnsparger.
Greg Roman is the mastermind behind the offense in SF. He made the whole transition from Smith to Kaepernick work, he makes the offense successful no matter what the roster is like, he understands how important the running game is, and he gameplans, he doesn't just roll out the same stuff for every opponant. He can develop Tannehill, instead of suffocating him.
I don't know where we're at. We're an average team. Sometimes we look worse than an average team, to be honest with you.
So, it's a disappointment. Yes, Philbin is a solid manager of sorts, a good guy, seemingly organized. But I feel like he talked a good game, more than actually having one. Some people just seem to interview well. But as some have pointed out on this board (one thread was moved to The Depths of the Sea for some reason), Philbin was not the O Coordinator in Green Bay, and he didn't develop any QB's. What did he actually do to justify this position? When he came here, the first impression I got was that he was not inspiring, but would be the professor-type. He would teach and develop players. He even said that himself. But are we developing Tannehill? Did they make the right call to put all their eggs in the Lamar Miller basket? Did they use Wallace to his full potential? Who have they developed, exactly,... Egnew?
The best players that come to mind to me, Philbin and Sherman had nothing to do with. Brent Grimes, Patterson, Wallace are free agents and they are doing their thing. Wake was BP (Before Philbin). Solai is BP. Hartline is BP. What other names jump out at you?
And then, it brings us back to the QB. That's a call no one can make right now. Maybe RT is going to make it, maybe he won't. but the fact that probably the only reason we have him is because Mike Sherman wanted him, doesn't fill me with confidence. I've not been impressed with how Sherman runs things. I actually like Philbin more than Sherman. But both their jobs will ride on Ryan Tannehill. So that young man has a lot on his shoulders.
Right now, with this whole Incognito FIASCO, and the previous purge of leadership on our roster, and the problems it directly caused, I'm not very happy with our coaching staff. Not at all. And while I was giving Incognito the benefit of the doubt and thought this was being overblown (and to some extent still do), it's apparent that there were problems with Incognito even last year that warrented them benching, or cutting him. It's shocking that a Philbin-led team would tolerate the golf club incident, in broad daylight. Can you imagine Jason Taylor or Zach Thomas doing anything like that? If you say, well that's how Incognito is, then the answer is, if you keep him on the roster you have him on a short leash. And what's baffling, the O line sucked, anyway, so how much were they actually losing? Guys like Vonte Davis, who wanted to pee, and Bush, who was a leader in the locker room, didn't qualify to be Miami Dolphins, but a guy like Incognito somehow did. It really makes me question their decision-making processes.
So at this point, I'm fine with a regime change, IF it's an upgrade. And there are coaching prospects out there, which would definitely be, over Philbin and Sherman.
