Best Tight end ever to playthe game.

I was a huge Mark Bavaro fan. I know he may not have been the `best` but he was an absolute beast. I remember the Monday night game in San Fran back in 1990 (I think). He caught a ball and then carried Ronnie Lott and two other `niners on his back for a good ten yards. Awesome!!

Most Fin Fans don't like Sharpe due to the Beef he's had with Marino in the past - that's the only reason he hasn't gotten his due on this board regarding the Question. That Said, Shannon Sharpe is easily the best TE of all time.

Ask any other board without Bias and you'll get the same reply - Shannon Sharpe, First Ballot HOFer and best TE of all Time.

Shannon played for 14 seasons, and Kellen played for nine.

Saying that Shannon was better than Kellen is like saying Peyton is better than Marino, they are players from two different eras. Apples and oranges.
That being said, here are the 9 year avgs of both players

KW

Games Rec Yards Y/R TD
109 541 6741 12.5 45

SS
Games Rec Yards Y/R TD
139 529 6759 12.7 44

So lets examine this for a second. 30 more Games, 18 more yards, 12 less receptions, and one less touchdown. I am not going to add the what if factor into KWs stats, but add 30 more games to his stats and he destroys SS by everything except Y/R.

Present- Gonzo
Past - Kevin Winslow- Chargers,John Mackey - Colts,Jackie Smith- Cardinals,Mike Ditka

Raymond Berry was a WR for the Colts.Blind in one eye and always underestimated he was a master of the sideline pass and a clutch receiver.

That's just a reach. I saw both careers in their entirety and no comparison; Winslow was far superior to Shannon Sharpe. Much bigger and also more agile and athletic. There was a reason Winslow was a well known star as early as his junior year at Missouri and a relatively high first round pick, while Sharpe lagged in the later rounds. Again, pure athletic ability. I'm a Dolphin fan but as I've posted many times I thought the Marino era was a boring pantyhose waste, for the most part, especially compared to the well rounded masterpiece teams of the early '70s. My preference of Winslow over Sharpe is due to basic superiority.

More great additions since I last posted in this thread, namely Dave Casper, Ozzie Newsome and Mark Bavarro. All were terrific and I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer all 3 to Sharpe. Bavarro was a marvelous fit to the Giants' tough guy personna under Parcells, likewise Casper an ideal big play receiving threat for Stabler alongside Cliff Branch. Casper adjusted to the ball as well as any TE ever. I remember Ozzie Newsome as a solo WR in a wishbone set for Bear Bryant at Alabama. When Cleveland moved him to TE I wasn't alone in thinking Newsome was too small for the position. Guess I botched that one.

Old school--Winslow,Newsome and Christiansen(didn't he lead all recievers in receptions one year)

More recent--Gonzo and Sharpe

Fave all time---Mark Bavaro

I wouldn't bet on it, just ask Raiders,Chargers,KC and Giants fans to name a few :)

1. Kellen Winslow
2. Mike Ditka
3. John Mackey
4. Shannon Sharpe
5. Ozzie Newsome
6. Dave Casper
7. Brent Jones
8. Kieth Jackson
9. Jackie Smith
10. Mark Bavaro

Naming Ben Coats as the greatest TE of all time is an embarrassment to FinHeaven.com

the best tight end in my opinion was shannon sharpe the boy was a freak of nature

1. Kellen Winslow.

2a. Ozzie Newsome

2b. Shannon Sharpe

Note that Dan Fouts had to spread the ball between Winslow, Charlie Joyner, Wes Chandler and their RB (whose name I can't remember) who was one of the leading pass receiving RB's at the time if I remember right. Therefore, although Winslow's numbers don't really match up to Shannon Sharpe's, his impact was just as great. I saw Winslow and Sharpe alot and I have to vote for Winslow every single time. The guy was terrifying to watch.

Good call there, almost forgot about Bavaro. He might not have put up the huge numbers some others did but if I needed one guy for one play to get a 3rd and long or a redzone Td Id probaly take Bavaro, like u said he was a beast.

We never had a good tight end except for MC Mike. I say IMO the best ever TE to play the game Ben Coates, his stats are good but boy his blocking was amazing, i know uguys are gonna say Sharpe Gonzo but i liked Coates, the guy was a special player, i also think Wes Walls was good also, the TE's are quality ones that u will never find again there just leaders and special to an organization

Keith Jackson was a pretty darn good tight end for Miami too.
