Dolphins undrafted rookie linebacker Zach Vigil makes statement

4 for 4 for 32 in a half pretty much against camp fodder...what do you think that turns into vs 1s?

I dont care if his fathers on this board as a poster it is what it is

Ignorance huh...i have been evaluating prospects for like 10 years now and stiff hips are stiff hips...its why they make these guys do lb drills at the combine and see how they change direction etc...you can yoga pilates all you want but you arent gonna change a guy thats stiff to not being.

Again name some names...has cam wakes hips changed since he joined the team...or has he been stiff in them the entire time? You wanna tell me that guy doesnt do everything he can to try and be more flexible as an edge rusher and he still has stiff hips...always will too

Zach vigils hips will always be stiff...

So I discussed this with my wife and she brought up an excellent point. When claiming someone has stiff hips it's also a very good possibility that you are witnessing someone with slower reflexes. EX: a lineman can't sink as fast as others before engagement, a LB or RB doesn't naturally posses a quick COD and it's not a direct result of stiff hips. We're not trying to increase someone's height here or lengthen their arms, it's ****in flexibility.

You can either accept that or GTFO because . . .

Serious question here but do you think it's possible an athlete can improve their hip flexibility?

Or are tight hips a permanent limitation?

Just seems kinda harsh to say a rookie can't ever get better in an area of weakness.

Yes you most certainly can. I worked a camp with Art Kehoe, the Miami Hurricanes OL coach for maybe the past 30 years, he has his lineman put 135 pounds on the bar and squat as deep as they can. If you're stiff you'll always be a little stiff, everyone has a limit, but yes, you can most certainly improve it. You should have seen Ereck Flowers coming out of HS.

A little off topic but what do you think of Jaylon Smith and Reggie Ragland in next year's draft? We really need a force at MLB in order for the defense to be elite imo.

1. Jaylon Smith
2. Myles Jack
3. Scooby Wright
4. Reggie Ragland

Darron Lee from Ohio State is an absolute stud as well, but he's a will in a 4-3 and we have a good one there in Jelani.

If we arent saying the same thing about zach vigil 2 years from now i will ban myself for 3 months...if hes not stiff hipped hoops takes a vacation...

Improving but still being stiff is still stiff...im calling him a stiff for nfl lifer

Oh and sons of shula brandon boykin and ryan mathews werent stiff coming out as prospects

So that doesnt do much for me...

Ereck flowers also showed stiff at the combine which is why i thought he was a better fit for a power scheme so i dont know why he would be a good example...he was still stiff

As some may remember, I have some personal ties to Zach. First and foremost, I will be the first to admit that he has some hip tightness and that can lead to him struggling to change directions quick enough. However, if somebody tells you that that can never be improved upon, even slightly, please stop listening to then immediately. I remember being horrified early on in Zach Thomas' career when he'd find himself in a mismatch coverage wise. Huge strides can be made with instinct, adapting to the speed of NFL play (mentally) and getting comfortable in your defensive assignments which usually leads to better anticipation.

Zach Vigil is going to make this team, and when he plays, you will see a young kid that from time to time gets taken advantage of in coverage. I expect him to improve with experience. You'll also see a kid that comes right back and makes a negative play in the offenses backfield right after he gave up a pass reception. The kids motor is eerily similar to our other Zach's and I've just seen it too many times to think otherwise. He is absolutely hell bent on the fact that he is making this team and he refuses to think otherwise. As I've already shared in another Zach thread, he's so forward thinking, he's already backed out of a family Elk Hunting trip in late January because the Dolphins will be busy prepping for the Super Bowl.

Yes, I am a Zach homer but I'm not too worried about arguing his merits. I think you all will see what I'm talking about as this progresses.

Elk hunting, now that sounds like a Utah kid. I don't even know anything about him I guess that's his home state? I wish him luck. This is one of the biggest areas of need on the team and from a long time fan I'd say any help is welcome at LB. If you want to get your foot in the door at LB I think Miami should have a great big help wanted sign. A name like Zach is certainly a plus! Even if a backup/special teams there are some roster spots to make.

This off season the most encouraging thing I've seen with the LB group is knowing that Suh will be lining up in front of them.

I like this kid. I don't know how his coverage skills are going to pan out but he has a good feel for the run and blitz schemes

I was just reading he was supposed to be a good coverage guy and run stopping was an issue...but again, was reading, I know duck all about the guy.

...stiff is stiff

I think we can clarify where we are not meeting eye to eye.

I'm speaking literally, almost strictly in medical terms. You are speaking figuratively in scouting terms. I'm trying to explain how flexibility can be improved if in fact someone is diagnosed with stiff hips. You are implying a stiffness in regards to their play whether it be leverage, waist bender, click & close, COD, playing upright, etc. all factors that also include other traits such as reaction time, reflexes, instincts, balance and the likes.

Just trying to clear the air here as the argument as reached slightly ridiculous levels and we both feel that we are right.

Either way, I respect your knowledge on this board. Cheers. :brewskis:

Vigil reminds be of that Bobby carpenter...not good!

I think Vigil needs to hit the weight room. The guy shows a lot of promise, seems to be everywhere around the field. I'm pulling for him to step up.

remember he is just a rookie.... most of these guys need to!!!

aside from the hair, don't really see it. Bobby didn't really play in the middle in college like Vigil did and he also had his hand in the dirt a lot as a pass rusher. Not saying Vigil will be a steal but not the best comparison. Based on what we've seen from every MIKE we've looked at though, Vigil fits what we want to do. People have to stop saying someone can't be a MIKE in our system because it's fairly obvious what some here are looking for in a MIKE is not what we are looking for.

I mean it's early but even a guy like Eric Kendricks who the board loved is WAY down in the pecking order right now for the Vikings behind Brandon Watts, Audie Cole, Josh Kaddu, and Gerald Hodges.
