THis is not what you want to see from your gm if this is true. A player would get called to the carpet for that. Ireland is the ahole.

Agree. im not saying fine or penalize Ireland. Heck, this is one of the very least issues i have with him but yeah, he was an employee calling a rude customer an ******. A big no no. but like i said, im not surprised Ireland couldnt just ignore him
 
Like Sparano, I don't have anything against the guy personally. Sparano was actually a very nice guy when I met him. He just wasn't a good coach. No clue if Ireland is a douchebag or not and I don't care. I only care about his ability as a GM, and so far I'm not impressed.

So that being said, the fan is a douchebag. Ireland would have been better off just ignoring him, but I can't fault him for his response.

Oh I agree, I do also. I just don't see us being there yet. I will take what I can get at this point. I would be excited with a win vs the jets, which is one of the worst teams in the league.

Just because you are a "customer", it doesn't give you the right to get in the face of an employee, insult them and tell him to "Fire yourself". If I was Ireland, I would tell this "customer" to shop elsewhere and get off my property. Whether Ireland called him an a-hole to his face or said it under his breath as he walked away(which is what is being reported), he still probably shouldn't have said it. Would have been better to just turn around and walk away from the situation. Still though, this doesn't give the "customer" a free pass to get in the face and yell obscenities and insults of his own at Ireland. I work with customers also in my job and if one got in my face and told me how horrible I was and that I should "fire myself" I don't think anyone I work with or any of my other customers would care if I muttered a-hole under my breath as I walked away. The fan was a douchebag, it wasn't like what Ireland said was not true.

Two hours after the story circulated on the internet, Ireland apologized for using the word in a statement to the Post:

“It did happen at halftime. I was going back to my booth after seeing my wife and I did talk to several fans that were very nice. But as I’m walking back this person introduced himself to me and made a comment to me.

“It caught me off guard. I just turned and walked away but I did say something I regret. I thought I was saying it to myself under my breath, but I must have said it loud enough that he could hear it. At the time I felt I handled the situation privately, but I probably spoke a little too loud. I regret that I said anything.”

wow just because we win one game people want to jump on irelands jock ? imo the raiders is a bad team we just got lucky because of the long trip across country for the raiders , if i would have been at the game i would have prob let ireland see my displeasure of how he has been running our franchise .

Agreed... this is mostly fueled by a particularly ignorant segment of the fan base, and is only being nibbled at (on the edge of being "serviced" by the fringes of the media).

For instance... read the following blog post:

When the above (which reads like a typical message-board post by a fan) is representative of the level of journalistic support for a "movement".... its hard to call it media-fueled. lol

"The Pulp tried to call the Dolphins for comment, but got the runaround." Really? Shocking. lol


If you want to observe and study and compare a REAL media fueled witch hunt... watch the current feeding frenzy on the NFL's "replacement ref's".

Those guy are being crucified by the media, and have been since day 1. From the outside... it appears ALL major NFL media outlets made a conscious decision to make the referee's a major storyline from the moment it became apparent they would used. I'd refer to it as a pre-determined media narrative... an agreed upon (at least tacitly) lense through which all stories regarding the league are viewed - and for which any possibly related incident is magnified to "league-threatening" levels. It's to the point, I don't believe it's amiss to accuse most major NFL media of actually inciting hatred in their viewers/readers. As for the agenda behind it? Unknown. Is it the predominantly leftist view of the media (yes, even in sports writing)... just supporting "labor"? Is it the "get-back" opportunity to bash the league on a subject most would say the media was previously (with the regular "good" ref's) complicit with the league in ignoring? Is it just a predetermined judgement that the "replacement ref's" whining and complaining would be good copy - and sell stories?

Anyway, for a Dolphins fan, for whom it's only been a year or three since he witnessed the regular "good" ref's actually award a win to the Pittsburgh Steelers that they didn't earn... and assign a loss to the Miami Dolphins that they didn't earn.... its tough to watch.

I have no problem with Ireland's response other then he should have made sure the guy was out of earshot. Ireland is the leader of the Dolphins and has to be more thick skinned when dealing with customers. He has to realize everything he does is scrutinized If the guy was really that obnoxious he should have been escorted out.

That said, I would have called the guy a lot more then an A-hole if I was Jeff.

To say that you would act the same way if someone did the samething at your job is a bad analogy. How often has anyone ever walked into your job and berated you in front of everyone? At sporting events it happens constantly. When basketball players are walking on and off the court, fans are screaming all sorts of obsenities toward them. Does that mean they should turn around and flip them off? The player would be highly criticized if he did. Fans sitting behind benches are always yelling at the teams players. Calling them every name in the book. It just comes with the territory. You accept that as part of the job description and you just ignore them.

So here we have an employee(Ireland) working for an organization whose reputations is not the most stellar one, has seen fan attendance drop dramatically, who is trying to garner fan support and is attempting to win back its fans. A fan does what a thousand other fans do at every event. Ireland could of easily just ignored him like almost every other person does in that situation but he cant help himself. It wasnt nearly the worst thing he has done but it was a pretty stupid thing to do coming from a franchise desperately trying to win back its fans.
