NCAA eyes booster's claims Miami players took cash

http://dennis-dodd.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270202/31628535

The Miami president lately has been greeting every new shred of Miami sleaze with her version of fireside chats from her office. Nice touch. Where exactly is that bunker she is speaking from?

Doesn't matter. Shizzle's about to get real. The NCAA suspended eight Miami players Tuesday for varying amounts of time (one to six games) in the scandal's latest chapter. But the most significant thing to come out of that announcement was a name in the first paragraph.

It may wait months or even years for the final verdict but it's clear the NCAA is well on its way to discovering everything Yahoo reported

Pretty terrible article. Bunch of drivel about nothing. The IRS is going to get involved when nobody took any cash? Discovering everything Yahoo reported? That would be impossible since 4 of 12 accused players have already been cleared. Lol did I see a death penalty reference in there? Yes, Shalala won't have a program to rebuild. Food and drinks sparks doom for the Miami football program. Lol... Quite sad what journalism has come to these days. Thankfully, I don't spend all day reaching for anything I can find or I'd find far too many disappointments like that article from some tard I've never even heard of.

The view from a Michigan fan is that given the length of suspensions, at this point the NCAA has little evidence of serious wrong doing on the players part. This was never going to be a death penalty situation but I am sure Canes fans were concerned based on the checkered past of the program. My guess is that those fans will gladly accept penalties at about the USC level given what they were concerned would happen.

That said, I think we all suspected the NCAA would be hard pressed to find anything involving current players. The bigger concern has to be that they are going back 10 years, that coaches and administrators are the root of the problem and that the NCAA may be looking to hang a program within an inch of it's life sending a message to other programs. It sucks for the program being used for that but given the Canes past, it should not be a surprise.

You guys do realize that this isn't a final NCAA ruling, right? They are investigating allegations going back a decade and they have already found one guy to have taken $1,200...

I predict 30 scholarships and a 3 year postseason ban

Now we play the waiting game with the NCAA infractions committee. Definitely won't know anything soon...probably after the season but I think we'll have a better indication once the NCAA rules on the North Carolina investigation.

Nope. I had no idea.

:idk:

Three-year post-season ban...not happening. Again, the winds of NCAA rulings are changing drastically. It's no longer fair to punish the kids of today for the crimes of yesterday. You and I both know it. There's so much outcry for the NCAA not to listen. If the NCAA punishes Miami by giving them a post-season ban, Alonzo Highsmith has already said that he is prepared to sue.

That's not saying that Highsmith would win that case, but it's a step in the right direction to overhauls and policy changes in how the NCAA rules. It's something the NCAA doesn't want on their plate. Miami doesn't want to be in the spotlight nor does any other program in college football, and in turn, the NCAA doesn't want to be in a bad spotlight either.

You can't prevent improper benefits in college football. You're all naive if you truly believe that players at your program hasn't received something. In grand total, Miami players took roughly $5,000. Big whoop. Walk-ons at SEC programs probably receive double that. It's not going to stop until the NCAA does something different. If the NCAA truly wants to clean up the sport and even the playing field, they need to seek federal help. You have to punish the source of the money and improper benefits. Thru legislation, you can make it a felony to hand these student-athletes improper benefits. This way, guys like Nevin Shapiro and even myself are scared to even pay for a kid's meal.

Miami might be guilty, but it's college football whose image is truly tarnished here.

What hurts the most about all of these suspensions is that we're now thin on the defensive front.

So the key to beating Maryland is our defensive line against their offensive line.

And looking at their roster...I'm seeing a large number of Freshman across that line.

50 Evan Mulrooney Offensive Lineman 6-4 275 FR HS Wilmington, Del./Salesianum HS
68 Josh Cary Offensive Lineman 6-5 290 SO 1V Chenango Forks, N.Y./Chenango Forks HS
65 Sal Conaboy Offensive Lineman 6-3 270 FR RS Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights HS
68 Gary Harraka Offensive Lineman 6-4 300 FR RS Ijamsville, Md./St. John's Catholic Prep
71 Nate Clarke Offensive Lineman 6-3 295 FR HS Washington, D.C./Archbishop Carroll HS/Fork Union Military Academy
60 Stephen Grommer Offensive Lineman 6-4 280 FR HS Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg HS
54 Cody Blue Offensive Lineman 6-4 260 SO SQ Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake HS/Fork Union Military Academy
61 Jake Wheeler Offensive Lineman 6-7 275 FR RS Hollywood, Fla./American Heritage HS
55 Ryan Doyle Offensive Lineman 6-6 265 FR HS Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest-Rolesville HS)

63 Bennett Fulper Offensive Lineman 6-4 295 JR 2V Gretna, Va./Gretna HS
66 Andrew Zeller Offensive Lineman 6-5 290 FR HS Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Senior HS
76 R.J. Dill Offensive Lineman 6-7 300 JR 2V Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity HS
79 Pete DeSouza Offensive Lineman 6-6 310 SO 1V Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha HS

Player to watch defensively for Miami: Anthony Chickillo. True Freshman. Stud defensive end. Everyone in the country wanted this kid and if it weren't for former Miami Hurricanes in his family, this kid probably goes elsewhere.

Player to watch offensively for Miami: Lamar Miller. Superstar written all over him. Down two receivers and our starting QB, the Hurricanes will pound Lamar Miller all night long. EASILY 100+ yards.

No player took $1,200 at all, but nice try. Vernon got $200 worth of benefits in the form of food and drinks. The $1,000 was a donation made to his high school by Shapiro. Sorry to disappoint.

They can go back as long as they like. All they're going to find is the same petty stuff they're finding now. Sorry haters (not you Ted), it's nobody's fault but your own you fell for the sensationalism and bought into the fabricated hype of prostitutes and abortions and were hoping for stiff penalties, when it's nothing more than a midget who tried to buy friends by taking them out for drinks and dinner.

As for our past, the Pell Grant scandal was 20 times worse than this. Uncle Luke was worse than this. He was actually handing out cash, although with good intentions, unlike Shapiro, who was pretty much a pedophile trying to take advantage of kids by wining and dining them because he couldn't find any real friends.

The NCAA has no choice but to start changing some of their ridiculous, outdated policies. It won't be too long before everyone gets tired of it, and someone like Mark Cuban creates their own league and offers similar money to the NCAA, without the ridiculous policies, and lack of a playoff system.

This could really happen to anyone. And people read about hookers and stuff...come on. Guys like Shapiro with millions to blow...you pay girls to sleep with whoever. It's not like the players took money and went out to the street corners to pick up trashy hookers. I'm sure these girls were top of the line escorts...which ultimately doesn't matter...but what I'm trying to say here is Shapiro isn't going to tell these kids that these girls are hookers and the girls aren't serving that information up to some kid if she's already been paid. My guess is, Shapiro had girls lined up for miles at his beck and call. He'd bring these girls to the clubs and have them waiting to do whatever with whoever.

If you and I show up at a club and I say pick any girl you want and I'll have her take good care of you.

Are you gonna want a background check of this chick or are you just gonna let her take care of you?

Unfortunately what is in the present is always the worst. What really bothers me as a fan is that we all agree the system is broken except the wizards running the NCAA. My fear is that they are going to make an example out of someone and that MAY be the Canes, though I thought they would be harder on Ohio State. Somebody convince me they dont play favorites.

They don't play favorites and they won't make an example out of Miami. And there's a good reason why.

As you said, everyone knows that the system is broken. So as soon as they do make an example of someone, that's when all hell breaks loose against the NCAA. Everyone thought they would be a lot harder on Ohio State. Everyone under investigation recently has gotten off fairly easy for the crimes they've committed. And I fully expect the same to happen to Miami.

MAYBE a one year post-season ban. Definite loss of scholarships. Perhaps we forfeit some wins over the past decade but who cares? What happens on the field begins and ends on the field. If a kid took some cash on a Wednesday to fill his stomach and then whipped your *** on a Saturday night, he still got to eat and he still whipped your ***. Doesn't make a damn if he damn if he got to eat or not, you still got your *** whipped. Taking cash and getting meals, or shoes, or anything like that...not cheating in the true sense of cheating. Taking steroids, stealing plays, etc., THAT is cheating. "Forfeiting" wins doesn't change the result on the field and the past doesn't matter much anyway.

I can't see the NCAA making an example out of Miami, or anyone else for that matter. As JCane put it, all hell would break loose. Nobody is happy with the NCAA. Piling on Miami for players hanging out on the weekends when most people agree players deserve stipends to be able to go out and have fun on the weekends anyways just makes no sense. Piling on Miami while they go soft on OSU, who's "crimes" are as bad if not worse than Miami, would look real bad. The NCAA really can't afford to do anything until they finally take a look in the mirror.

Like I said previously, some powerful, rich people like Mark Cuban are waiting for the NCAA to **** up so they can pounce.
