Here's an attempt to show just how rare elite QBs are and how likely it is we get one....
Everyone can agree that Rodgers, Big Ben, Brady, Wilson and Newton are your current bonified elite QBs...
The first one drafted in that bunch is Big Ben in 2004
That means 5 guys in 12 years
Thats not even one once every 2 drafts
Add in the fact that there are 10+ QBs drafted every year and that 4 of the 5 elite guys werent even drafted 1st overall and 2 of them beyond the 2nd round
Its quite obvious that 1) Sucking for anyone is a very stupid strategy 2) Finding that elite QB is alot more about luck than anything else.... About (2): It seems as though you can make your own luck by building a strong foundation, fixing your weakest links systematically until QB is your weakest link. Building a strong running game and defense makes any rookie QB's job a whole lot easier...
Finding a good QB is about talent evaluation more than anything, just like any other position. We've failed in talent evaluation for years. It hasn't been bad luck.
Your evaluation of elite talent seems kinda random. I'd put Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, Phillip Rivers, and Drew Brees in with that bunch. Carson Palmer deserves mention, but he's in the twighlight of his career. I know Luck and Ryan will have naysayers who are either still upset about being on the wrong side of the Jake Wrong/Matt Ryan debate or are still pissy about Suck for Luck, but they are top QBs in this league, like it or not.
But you don't need elite. That's just a bonus. You certainly need consistently good and at the very least, all of the above fall into that category. Sure, teams make it to the playoffs al the time with average (at best) QBs and top talent elsewhere, just look at Cincy. Denver probably will too. But when the fat is on the fire and you're playing against other equally good teams, the top QB is going to win 9/10. Then the team with the average QB convinces themselves that it's not the QB that's the problem, that "plenty of teams do well with average QBs," so they continue to build in other areas. Then they're out in the first round of the playoffs again, scratching their heads and trying to figure out what went wrong.
