Who was the last rookie QB who tore up the league

In terms of individual stats/performance?

Herbert.

Set the rookie record for total TDs in a season with 36, breaking Newtons record of 35Tds.
Set the rookie record for passing TDs with 31, previously held by Mayfield who had 28 TDs
Set the completion record, previously set by Wentz.

All in 15 games.

@Schleprock is right.
  • Robert Griffin. He threw for 3200 yards and rushed for 815 in his rookie season completing 65.6% of his passes with 20 TDs in the air and 7 more rushing.
  • Our very own Marino who threw 2,210 in just 11 games with 20 touchdowns.
  • Wilson was pretty great too with 3,118 yards, 26 TDs and a 100% passer rating
  • Luck blew it up with 4,374 passing yards and 23 TDs
  • Dak Prescott 3,667 Yards with 23 TDs and a 67.8% completion rate.
  • Matt Ryan 3,440 with an 87.7% passer rating
  • Cam Newton with 4000 yards, 706 more on the ground
There have been a lot of great rookie QBs.

So... volume stats?

So... volume stats?

When most people talk about QB's and how good they are, they bring up stats.
It's yardage and TDs/limiting INTs.
I mean people talk up Marino as one of the best yet he won jack **** and no one remembers Trent Dilfer.

Unless you want the answer to be Dak Prescott from 2016 who went 13-3 W-L, 23 passing TD 4 ints, with 3667 yards and 6 rushing TDS.
Simply cause the team won, yet if you followed them he was an efficient bus driver and the team won games due to a dominating rushing game lead by Zeke & their offensive line.

Probably Andrew Luck. Passed for over 4300 yards, scored almost 30 combined TD's and led the Colts to an 11-5 record.

Before that Cam Newton. Passed for 4000 yards and scored a combined 35 TD's. Passed for 420+ yards in his first start which was an NFL record and is the only rookie QB in NFL history to pass for 400 yards in their first start. The next week in his second career start he passed for over 430 yards and broke his own record.

Herbert's rookie season is right up there with those two. He essentially passed for over 300 yards in 8 of his 15 games. But no 400 yard games.

In a tier below that are probably the rookie seasons Baker Mayfield, Marcus Mariota, Robert Griffin, Rick Mirer & Peyton Manning had in terms of statistical seasons.

Right, but when a QB plays really well with volume stats the efficiency ones usually come with it.

Herbert threw the 3rd most passing attempts a game, right behind Big Ben and Burrow. This isn't a normal occurrence for rookie QBs to have to throw that much so you're looking at records that are related to him just throwing a bunch of times on a team with good offensive weapons. It's equivalent to a guy averaging 25 points a game in the NBA on a bad team because he shot the ball a ton. He may be shooting 40%, but he scored points!

He had a good season. I just am not going to get seduced by volume stats like a bunch of others seem to be.

He was on a bad overall team, with good weapons(aka the Dallas Cowboys lol).
Can see it two ways, yes he threw it a lot but at the same time he wasn't folding under pressure throwing picks left and right or seeing the team lose by 2+ scores often. He was able to keep his team in most games, and had some unfortunate games where he did lead them but either a kicker missed or the receiver couldn't on on through contact etc.

I'm not necessarily seduced by his stats, but for a rookie I thought he did well being thrown on a team that needed to rely on him often to stay in a game.
He couldn't be sheltered and at times had a running game led by Ballage of all backs...
